We trolled the river on Friday morning with shad raps and caught 4 keeper crappie before the wind picked up. It started blowing so bad that we couldn't troll in a straight line any more so we packed it up early.

Do you think there are crappie in the timber around toms creek area? Was thinking about hitting it up tomorrow, and I sure love my crappie. Was just wondering if anybody has ever caught any around the area. Thanks for any advice.

I have never had one from the timber there, but never targeted them either. Given the range of options in Tom's creek, I would be surprised if some were not there.

According to my Hot Spot map:

"Tom creek is filled with flooded timber which holds largemouth and crappie all year long."

There are definitely crappie in Tom's creek . Haven't caught huge numbers but haven't specifically targeted them. Plus I'm more of a bass fisherman but trying to fish more for crappie and whites this year

Fished canyon today 4/27 and caught a lot of quality fish. Best five would of gone 12+. Find drop offs and road beds and throw your favorite bait and have fun. I also managed a very nice size flat head and a few whites caught with a moving bait.

I fished the Toms Creek area for the first time Friday. It was rainy most of the morning with the wind picking up as I was getting off the water around noon. I fished the deeper big trees that are out in the middle of the cove. I caught 3 crappie and 1 20 inch striper, all caught on minnows drifting around the trees. I think I was out to deep for the crappie, managed the 3 but they were few and far between and were shallow also. Missed 2 more striper hits as well. Dropped a minnow and both times my rod got slammed hard. One broke me off in the trees and the other was a missed hookset. Toms Creek is a good looking area to fish. Boat ramp is close, and there is plenty of cover everywhere around there. I spoke to a older gentleman at the ramp who says he catches smallys and a lot of crappie around the TC area. It wasn't my most productive day, but it was fun. One last thing, how do I upload an image from my iphone to the forum? I snapped a photo of the striper with my phone..

Copy the pic to photobucket, then copy the "img" code (there will be 4 codes). Copy the code, then come back to this site and paste the code into the text box.

.
IMO they should stock Canyon Lake with threadfin shad, plenty of them. The fish I catch all look like they could use something to eat.

Need to improve my LMB fishing, running out of time.

And stock some hybrids! Wonder why this does not happen. Must be a reason.

Went out to Canyon on Saturday morning. The lake was like glass. Caught two decent sized stripers (24" and 26"), and three small largemouths. All in the Tom Creek area. Stripers on cranks, largemouths on texas rigged worms (black and chartreuse).

(This is my first post on here, so if the images don't show up blame inexperience)

Went out twice this weekend sat and sun and launched and fished at Tom's creek. Both days launched about 2 hrs before sunset.caught 6 or 7 small largemouth and a decent smallie 15 in. Also caught 2 large sunfish 1 pushing 8 in. Most of these came on a popper including the sunfish. A couple of the largemouth came on tx rig green pumpkin magic. Sun afternoon much the same but no keeper fish. 5 largemouth none bigger than 13 in and one dink smallie. These were caught along the ledges basically straight across from the ramp but not along the timber. Then as night fell turned on the new leds I got for boat and fished some brush in about17 ft of water had marked a bunch of fish there earlier. They ended up being. 7 to 8 in white bass caught 4 or 5 and was getting late and I had to work in morning. The leds worked great attracted a lot of bait to boat in 5 min had thousand ghost minnows follow me to ramp. Only got a trolling motor on boat so cant go too fast. Caught the whites on a 1/32 jig with gulp 1 in minnow. Was hoping they'd be crappies

The leds are 6 ft long and you get two of them for $110 with every thing u need to hook em up. They are sold by First class tackle near San Antonio. They work great

Gents,
Back in 2009, I did some Scooby-Doo mystery investigating and found out who to ask about stocking questions regarding hybrids (and red drum). Here is the reply that I had received:

"I determine which fish are recommended for stocking in Canyon Lake . Red
drum won't survive in Canyon Lake . The lake is not salty enough and it
gets too cold. Red drum are only stocked in power plant lakes that have
high chloride levels. Hybrid striped bass would also bio-accumulate
mercury, so we would have the same problem. In addition TPWD doesn't
have the facilities to expand our hybrid striped bass stockings program.
Ever hybrid striped bass we produce is already allocated to a specific
Texas reservoir. Canyon is stocked each year with striped bass. Canyon
Lake is full of catfish (Blue, channel and flathead) and I would
recommend those species if you are looking for something to eat. The
white bass population is also very good and they are safe to eat."

Wanted to share because this question burned a whole in my brain for a long time.
