"I tried to drag him into a for sure answer because.... as he and I discussed sunlight is critical and the amount of it but any way it went like this ... crappie spawn in direct relation to daylight and water temperature" ....
Remember, this is the guy who tells fictional soap operas and said he likes to embellish the story. So I wouldn't get too caught up in anything. I think that first line gives the answer; there is no for sure answer.

I really am interested to hear what the max spawning depth is, in a trivial sense that is. It probably won't change how I fish for them.

That's why he keeps talking to himself. He knows everything and rarely catches fish. He has to ask every local fisherman how and where they are catching their fish. I wonder how long his post would be if he went out and caught a limit by himself????

No man, it's maybe more like a Howard Stern thing. Shock value intended for entertainment purposes. Fishing is fun, right? And like most everything in life fishing is better with friends.

Sounds like it depends mostly on water clarity and the ability of sunight to penetrate it. For a muddy creek it would be 2' or less. For most of the stained East Texas lakes i'd say 5' or less. But for a clear water lakes it could be much deeper. Just my from the info given so far

True dat - fishing w/friends is best, but I've never complained about catching a slew of slabs by my lonesome, just wasn't anybody around to hear me boast - LOL

I happen to enjoy Mr. KETCHN'S POST'! The longer the better in honest opinion! Now, if I could just get off of this L.A. Freeway with G.C. everything would be dandy!

But for a clear water lakes it could be much deeper. Just my from the info given so far I think you Been saying this for years. Crappie and other members of the sunfish clan spawn as deep as the penetration of sunlight allows. They will spawn as deep as possible to get away from terrestrial predators, birds and what not. But, they need that sunlight (and "sun heat") to incubate the eggs. That's why the waters surrounded by bare banks are best if there is sufficient bottom. The sun hits the water for a longer period of time. I tend to lean on sunlight duration, water temp, moon phase and water fluctuation. Those are my big 4.
