first off I want to say "Ray' is a really nice guy and very informative ,
I tried to drag him into a for sure answer because ....
I wanted to dispel some myths on the spawn and the depths and other things related to the spawn that seemed to me ...
might not be exactly what we saw and thought was true ..........

My guess is somewhere in the neighborhood of 48 replies and 800 views before it's all said and done!

I am a lil busy here folks .....
but any way it went like this ...
crappie spawn in direct relation to daylight and water temperature ....
the "sunfish" family basically all follow similar patterns ....
he told me he has no evidence and has no literature to suggest its possible for anything ....
in the "sunny" family to be able to spawn when daylight isn't present at the depth they are wanting to spawn .....
he went on to describe specifics that I will disclose later .....
got to be left alone long enough to finish giving up all the information he gave me

Just to recap, the guesses so far for maximum spawning depth are:

5'
6-8'
7-12'
10'
10-12'
15-18'
18-20'
23' 4"
25'
32'

Any more guesses? I think we're going to have to wait until sometime after 5pm for the answer.

according to the state fish biologist again sunlight must reach the bed ....
as he and I discussed sunlight is critical and the amount of it ...
and then he says .....all of our local lakes are quite "turbid" ....lacking water clarity ....
and this would keep crappie from spawning deep for several reasons .....
to be continued ....

we discussed how people ketch crappie from deep water that are on the verge and
the fish toss the eggs on the way in the boat and while they are in the boat ...
anglers automatically tell him and post here they are spawning deep .........
these fish are doing what mother nature intends for them to do
they are stressed out by the capture and its built into them to release the eggs in a last ditch effort to keep the species going ....
no matter where .....
this he says creates confusion among anglers ....I agreed ...
more to come ...
