esp. small children, be careful some parts of the banks (on s pond) are steep, grass can be slippery in morning. We used to go feed the ducks there when my kids were small, my younger one tumbled into the pond, luckily his jacket float and I was standing next to him and pulled him out of the water immediately.

The pursuit (where are the fish), rigs design and setup, scouting, the awesome feeling of casting your rigs 100+ yards out, the total focus on the fish and the elements, the outdoors... the total exhaustion at the end of your fishing day,... the cooler full of fish to bring home... Yeah, I'm going to miss bank fishing!

Just an FYI that feeding the ducks is no longer allowed and is posted on both ponds. Please kindly pass along the message to anyone that it is a posted property. Those water turkeys need to leave before all of the fish do!

It's been years ago, there were only about a couple dozen ducks in in each pond, and back then hardly any one fished there... I was there late last fall, didn't see the signs but did saw a gizillion ducks, especially on the north pond. Was thinking about catching some bluegills for catfish baits, but noticed a few people were fishing for bluegills (with rod and reel of course), just didn't feel morally right for me to take the gills out of those ponds, so I just headed back home. I have not been back there ever since (I don't fish at ponds.) But yeah I can see the conflict of interests between fishermen and the ducks in those ponds, and will definitely pass the words along about the no duck feeding signs. smile

As a regular at this pond, I can tell you nothing burns me up more than the idiots that come along and dump several pounds of cat food in the pond. They are part of the "rules don't apply to me crowd."
Over feeding these ducks causes several issues. The ducks will do fine without you dumping your leftover spaghetti on the bank. Yep, I've seen it. These are also the same people that ask me about fishing and if I take anything out because the ducks will not have anything to eat. I normally use this opportunity to educate them. For example duck species, how long they stay before migrating, what they eat, and how they taste. Also the reason not to feed them- it causes unnatural behavior. I've seen several hens killed by drakes trying to mate with them.
I've got nothing against Mom bringing the little ones to throw a few pieces of bread. It's fun for kids and and a few pieces are not going to hurt. It's the folks that roll up and dump a loaf of bread on the bank or pounds of cat food. They took away the opportunity for the kids to have fun.
Also you screwed up fishing for my kids. You think bluegill bite after eating all the floating food?
Thank you allowing me to get that out. More to come later and the fish are biting. I'm usually on the North pond, West side with a fly rod. Stop by and I will be happy to let you know how they are biting.

Lol, take it easy Andouille, I don't think you were talking about me or my kids, but the numerous "you" require this reply. I'm the last person you need to lecture to on wildlife and/or Nature. I've been an outdoor person and a naturalist pretty much all my life. My kids were introduced to the outdoors as soon as they could walk, and they know more about Nature and wildlife than the average sophomore biology major college kids... My kids had long moved on to "big ponds" and they know how to catch bigger fish, seen real wildlife by the thousands,...

But just to clarify, I was talking about back in 2007-2008 when my youngest son was only 2 yr old we used to go to those ponds, just strolling around, playing freebie, looking for the duck eggs (yes some of those ducks are permanent residents there), etc. In the Winter time, sometime we brought some sliced bread to feed them. We know better than to overfeed or feed them with meat product which contains rBGH (bad for humans and very bad for animals). We broke bread into small pieces, and threw a few pieces at a time to the ducks, the hungry ones would come flying,... big ones would horded most food, so we walked around the ponds to throw to the smaller ducks, etc. We didn't just dump every thing in the water, I don't recall we ever threw the whole loaf of bread in the ponds, we brought the left over bread home.

And for those people that you were talking about, who dumped food on the ground should be ticketed for littering public park and endanger small children by making the ground dirty and slippery near the water's edge, etc.

Anyhoo, just don't want you or any body to think that I'm "one of them."

Happy fishing! smile

I hear ya', Andouille. I was out there last week and while I was watching my line approximately 15 lbs of catfood came floating by. I watched an older lady get back in her mini van and drive off. There are a few that feed the ducks this garbage daily, sometimes more than one person. Among the ones that pizz me off the most are those that bring an entire truck full of Mr. Bairds bread, dump it, and LEAVE THE FREAKIN' BAGS!!!!! Don't even get me started on the morons that keep any and everything they catch. I'm amazed that there are any fish left in there at all. No quicker way to ruin something than to make it public I suppose. The TPWD manages these ponds as public fishing areas, the only ones of their kind in Dallas as a matter of fact. I wish they would more actively manage the knuckle heads. I bet a warden checking for licenses out there would clean it up pretty quick.

Fish Ren- I was not in any way talking about you. It was very late and I decided to unload. I have no problem with parents letting their kids feed a few pieces to a duck, especially the local ducks. Its fun for kids and who doesn't remember doing this as a child. Its great in the spring when you get to see the chicks follow their Mom and chase bugs in the grass. Its the ones that OTB mentions above that ruined this for everyone by dumping whole loaves of bread and buckets of cat food. They are the reasons for the signs.

OTB- I do my best to discourage people from taking fish. Aside from cleaning the place out, that pond is a drainage ditch. I've pulled more trash and diapers out of there than I care to discuss. I've contacted TPWD on a few occasions when people show up and cast net for bait and then leave the fish they do not want on the bank flopping around. I figure out where there are going and then make the call. I never know if anything is done, but its considered a "waste of resources," and a fineable offense.

Soon I will write about the confrontations I've had with the cat food people. I had to pull the fisherman harassment card on them. It was fun.

Caught a nice one today on a bed in the North pond. No pic since I left my phone in the truck.

It's pretty much dried up. I haven't caught anything since about the last week of March. Those fish are pooped I think. They get so much pressure that even bedding fish are reluctant to bite. I haven't seen any shallow in the past week though.

I still remembered about two years ago when the city put that green stuff in those ponds. I think it was suppose to kill the algae. But at the same time, it also killed a lot of the fish, especially on the south pound. I remembered getting out of my car and immediately smelled that awful stench. Huge bass, cats and carp were lying dead on the bank. It was a sad scene to look at.
