I have been using a med heavy Ugly stick for years for worm fishing, and have always been happy with it's performance. But lately I have been wondering just how much better are the newer rods as far as what you feel. If you were going to replace the Ugly stick what would you get and why? Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

if you are serious about bass fishing then yes it is time to upgrade. you will not believe the feel of the bait you will get with a quality rod. i used to be aginst spending over $40 dollars for a rod. then i broke down and bought my first carrot stick. you will here from many that they break and they do if you dont use them correctly. i would look at duckett, dobyns, carrot stick, and bps carbon light.

I really like the falcon bucoo rods and the allstar jig/worm rods in 7 ft. Super sensitive and will hold up on a big bass. From my personal experience I stay away fron the abu garcia rods especially the veritas as I have snapped three in half on hook sets. Hope this helps

Trinity Custom Rods are exceptional.

Also look at Temple fork rods. they are goos too.

On a budget, look at an All-Star Micro or a BPS Carbonlite. If you can spend a little more - Dobyns, Falcon, or TFO.

Why? That Ugly Stick is made of fiberglass. So it's heavy, the tip is slow, and it's not very sensitive, especially compared to the rods above. Once you get a sensitive rod you can use your bullet weight to feel out pretty much anything. You can tell it its rock or wood or metal etc. Plus you'll probably feel twice the bites. It changed my world when I finally bought a few good rods.

It is not just about sensitivity, it is about how the rod loads up and helps you keep the fish hooked. I switched over to Reel Time Rods this year and had Ron custom build me 4 rods for 2013. The amount of fish I lost last year with my older rods was very costly. This year I have not lost a single fish on my Reel Time Rods and that is money in the bank.
Ron will build you custom rods for the cost of over the counter rods and he stands behind his product.

Anything would blow the wagon wheels off that ugly stick. Go to Academy and pick up any casting rod over 50$. I would start with a H2O Ethos 7ft MH. if you really wanna make a jump get a duckeet 7MH or a Kistler KLX 7MH

I have a couple and love them, but look at them carefully before buying one, some of the tips are not straight and have a left or right bend to them.
