I use 12 lb mono and have landed everything from sandbass to big hibbies, to big strips, to big catfish and even huge carp. A good rod, properly set drag and non freyed/knicked line can handle a lot. Of coarse you can just use 100 lb braid and then it can double as an anchor line when you find the fish welcome

I actually use 10# powerpro with 20# mono Trilene leader when fishing creeks for big fish. Palomar knots.

In my boat, 4-8 lb. mono, no leader.
