I don't know what your budget is for gear but a great budget friendly setup would be an Okuma Trio-S30 with 30 lb braid on a 7' MH Ugly stick. Use a good 18" mono or flouro leader tied with a modified Albright or blood knot. Make sure the rod is one piece though. You can always get a much better rod but those things will take a beating and won't break the bank. The 7' MH will give you enough backbone to be able to make some really nice casts but still be able to cast some lighter baits.

Live shrimp and mullet are always a safe bet for just about any species, especially in the jetty. Be sure to use a circle hook if you are fishing for reds. State law.

For reds I also like to use a Bomber Badonkadonk topwater in the Mardi Gras or Bone color. They KILL those things!

DOA shrimp also work particularly well for reds, trout, jack, flounder, and just about aything else.

Good luck. I wish i was going to be in SPI fishing!

You only have to fish with circle hooks when fishing for red snapper, not redfish.

How far out, to each side, do the rocks go...meaning the rocks that are under the water, that you cant see?

I was taught the old "big weight...double drop leader" ..heave it out there and wait technique. I'm worried about getting hung up.
