David, Here is some info that might help you out.

http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Gallery/Descript/Sandbarshark/sandbarshark.htm

I've confirmed sandbar with many other experienced shark fishermen and the game warden.

UPDATE: A buddy of mine talked to the game warden yesterday afternoon. He said the guy sounded PO'd when he saw all the pictures. The GW said they can prosecute from picture but they have to be able to track down the people in the pictures (which i knew would be the hard part). So as of now, they are looking into it. Hopefully they will have a talk with the owner and show more of a presence on this pier.

UPDATE: The game warden said that the pier can be cited also since they are charging people to fish on it. I wonder if they are going to be getting a handful of tickets.

I do not agree with people poaching fish or game.but I think the regs need to be simplified for the people who don't fish as much as some of us.a man that visits the coast once a year shouldn't need to take a class to fish for the weekend.and most of us that practice catch and release kill more fish a year than a tourist that just didn't know any better.when the weekend fishermen and the meat haul fishermen are gone so are our rights as sportsmen.

In California we have 1800CALTIPS, which I've used 3 times. 1st time it got a guy who kept 3 short Halibut. The limit is 2 over 24". He was told by several people to release them and decided to stomp on their heads instead. When the Warden caught him 1-1/2 hours after I called it in his rod and the tackle close to where he hid the fish was confiscated and he was taken to his car and escorted away. The guys who told him to release them split up the remaining box of lures. I didn't get 1, but I didn't want anything he had.
The other 2 times I don't know if anything happened but I still felt like I had done what I needed to.

that's a sandbar, no doubt, and it's an immature female at that.
that woman deserves a fine, as does the pier mgmt/owner.
I bet one good one & it stops, a little greenshirt presence
on the weekend & boom, problem solved

I really hate poaching, but claiming ignorance when confronted about it really pisses me off. 9 out of 10 know EXACTLY what they're doing.

I disagree. The regs are pretty clear cut when it comes to what you are legal to obtain and how many. Anglers only need to properly identify maybe a dozen species and read a tape measure. It ain't rocket science. Ignorance is not innocence.

simplified?
dude, if you can type, I know you can read, & there's a FREE booklet available to read everywhere FISHING LICENSES are sold.
how simple can you get?
your comparisons don't make much sense to me either.
by the same hand, one should not be educated on the species they are hunting? so I could shoot a falcon while dove hunting
& because "I didn't know better", or I'm a "tourist" I should get a pass, even though the animal I killed was a protected species?
You talk of sportsman's rights, what about Sportsman's RESPONSIBILITIES?
think about it!

been fishing all my life started at 2 or 3 by the time i was 8 i could tell what fish species i was catching 8!! if you dont know what it is dont kill it or harm it easy rule of thumb. 2nd like the other post say there are books they give you when buying a licenses there not just there the person you get your licenses from is to offer it to you in most cases me and my gf (she has just started to fish) got our licenses day before yesterday and the young man at the front desk told me he gives them with the licenses everytime... so i truly see this as a people problem just not caring. they need to be fined and have there gear taken from them and no longer allowed to fish. easy and done. as for the piers they should pay a fee to def if they have taken pics.

Never forget to treat the animals we hunt and fish for with respect.

It's not that hard.

It's hard enough that even the fishermen on this site can't agree on what species it is!

It will continue until the pier owners put a stop to there employees letting it happen..They are not in law enforcement and can not enforce fish regulations..It also has to do with the employees letting it happen and knowing about the problems and doing nothing about it..As long as the pier people let it continue it will keep on happening ..it all about bringing in the money for the pier...they do not care..until..the state steps in and does something..And that is my two cents for what its worth soap

These are kind of two different statements, but I do agree with the first part, the pier wont stop until the state makes them stop. I would like to point out I just tried to get on the Piers facebook, and they seeem to have turned off all ways of posting on the site, including turning off comments on photos. Is this the pier taking a measure against things or protecting themselves from people posting negative things? I'm guessing the second answer is the one.

As far as the second part of the quote, the employees aren't law enforcement correct, but they CAN still enforce it or take measures to stop it. If they charge you to fish there, then surely they can kick you out right? It would go like this if I was working...

Hey lady with giant cachungas, stop butchering up that baby shark that you will likely never use all of anyway, and get the F off my pier. You broke the law, I will report you, and the only reason I am taking a picture is to turn you in, and not to put on my facebook for people to praise you for doing something horrible.

I was at SLP this weekend, and it was packed, and 1 TPWD officer came by, checked my licence, measured my keep, and proceeded to do this all the way down the beach. Why cant this be done at the pier?

Happy fishing!

Also I think they took down that picture of the lady and the baby shark. Anyone interested in a peaceful protest at the pier this weekend? I can be there and bring some signs. We can just stake out, out front and maybe get a little publicity? Maybe draw in TPWD?

Happy fishing!
