I must admit .. I did go out for a few hours to mess with the graph just to get a feel for it. I did carry the manuals with me too. I also adjusted the lss2 transducer level by feel / sight. I may get a level at some time but I've learned that at idle is my best pic. Above idle and I get a lot of air bubbles coming off the step. Mine is mounted on the jack plate. They've come a long ways since the one I bought for my dads Jon boat 10 or so years ago. It was a good one at the time, even came with a water wheel speed pickup to show the speed. Thanks for the welcome.

Hey Snake, there isn't anything to dial in, it's all automatic. As long as your ducer is properly installed (I'm assuming your talking about the structure scan). Or are you talking about the regular sonar?

Did you do the setup part, select transducer, select fishing mode "shallow or freshwater"? Run ping around 19, surface clarity should be "low" and put it in "auto", you might have to take the sensitivity down a bit to get rid of the clutter. But that should get it pretty close to where you want it.

Will this do for the HDS 8 gen 2? I just got the unit and used it for the first time today. The structure part looked to faint and far away, the sonar part looked full of clutter. What can I do to get it dialed in better than what I saw today? I'm going out on Cedar Creek so would like to hear from others who have HDS dialed in for that lake. 1-Transducer kHz 2-clarity 3-sensitivity 4-contrast 5-ping 6-mode (shallow, freshwater) And any other setting that helps with cleaner images. Thanks

Is it just me or does the structure scan not work all that well at shallow depths, say around 4 feet or less?

Doesn't work great at shallow depths is a fair statement, this is one of the areas Humminbird does have an advantage. But honestly does anybody really need SS in water 4' or less?

When its so dark and murky you can't see more than a foot down ... it'd be nice.
Just saying ...

I recently purchased a new Elite 7 and have used it maybe a dozen times at most. I wonder if one of you gurus can respond to a simple question? I have an HDS 8 on the console and the Elite on the bow. I am convinced the Elite is NOT showing a true down imagin picture. It appears to me to be a 2D sonar picture enhanced somehow to give the effect of DI. I compare the DI from my HDS 8 and the Elite and there is no comparison. I look at the 2D side by side the DI on the Elite and they are so similar it's shocking. I'm very serious about this and would greatly appreciate a knowledgable response. If I am correct, I believe Lowrance is giving false marketing information which I do not appreciate. PM me if you prefer, I just need to know what I have.
