If you are fishing from deeper water and throwing shallower you can slowly raise your rod and let the worm pendulum back toward you. This is easier with a lighter weight. Most of the time they'll grab it on the fall toward you and its easy to feel since you never lose contact with your bait this way. You will feel some kind of tap on most bites as the fish engulfs your baits. If you've ever watched bass eating in an aquarium you'd see that they suck in their prey and swim off as they swallow it. That's what happens with lures too. I think the best time to set the hook is anytime you feel something different going on with your line. Good luck

The first tap is when they take the bait, the second tap may be when they spit it out, don't wait. Like said earlier, "Hook sets are free"

I Got worms, that's what we're going to call it.

This is some great info. Thanks for starting this thread Clay, and thanks to everyone for your contributions.

Can anyone explain what a "t-rig" is?

T-Rig - Texas Rig

Bullet weight in front of the worm. Some people use a glass bead between the weight and hook for a little extra noise.

Texas rig can also be used without the weight. When I finesse fish a senko style bait I Texas Rig it, but without a weight.

Oh, durr, I know what a Texas rig is. Just unfamiliar with the abbreviation apparently, haha.

I've never T-rigged with weight. I've only ever done it weightless.

...I've also never caught a fish with it. Haha

Ok this is getting picky I know, but here are a few things that I've found to be true over the years....tungsten weights! Get them in a color close to your worm. The Tungsten weights alow you to feel everything you drag that worm across. They are smaller per weight than lead, and lead to me makes everything feel dead. Second a very good quality hook that is the right size for the thickness of the worm you are using. I really like Trokar hooks, and in most cases to T-rigs and C-rigs (Carolina Rig) worms I use a 4.0 or 5.0 hook. As far as retrieve.. I follow the old adage if you think you're fishing it slow...slow down some more! I normally throw out let the bait sink to the bottom...WATCH that line...if it moves in any direction except down, Set the HOOK! But the retrieve..I slowly and I mean slowly rise my rod tip until it's at about the 11 o'clock position, then as I lower my rod tip I reel in the slack as the tip lowers. The feel of the fish was well put earlier, it feels electric or alive, you won't mistake it for a rock or gravel. LOL ok I've rambled enough..I'll go into some finesse techniques when summer is in full swing! But lastly my largest Bass have all been caught on plastic worms. Largest to date 11.9 pounds.

I'm shocked Cody hasn't responded to this thread. T rigged worms is about ALL he ever uses! I have bought him a ton of other lures and plastics and he always goes right back to a T rigged worm.

It is what works best for him..... And he is good with it too!

I cant help myself either when it comes to dragging a t-rigged worm or softbait across every inch of water I can find. I learned worm fishing from my dad because he would just poke along every inch of water dragging and dragging and dragging. Dont be affraid to get some of those 10 and 12 inch worms as well. Creature baits like the baby brush hog are really good fishind this way too. They are becoming my go to bait here lately. Like others I have tons of spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and other stuff but seem to fall back on a t-rigged worm evertime.
