I think the pumps are more than sufficient, sometimes though you can just get a combination of factors that can't always be replicated. I can count on one hand the number of times I have had an issue across two seasons and 5 different tournament trails.
If you want my honest opinion, I think the culprit, particularly the time I couldn't get one to come up, was the wireless key fob. I could be wrong on that, not sure.
Either way, I think Power Pole makes a great product. I love being able to just pull up to a lay down and drop the poles. I use them a lot. But as with all equipment on our boats, they aren't perfect and being prepared can ease the sting on any inconvenience.

Mine have stuck down before, they were imbedded to far in the mud, moved around with the trolling motor and they broke loose. Those pumps have a lot of power, when I lower mine I can feel the rear of the boat raise a couple of inches.

Lot of great info in this thread as I have wondering the same thing.
I have had mine stick in the down position before and toggled up and down on the FOB while bumping the TM around and got them up. Mine too acted as if asleep or the FOB was sluggish. I hard wired a couple of toggle switches, one at the console and one at the bow so I don't use the FOBs any longer and just use the hard wired switches. I don't know if it is coincidence or not but mine have not hung up since.
And I will agree...PP makes a great product.
