I like holding the jig by the head, and pointing the tip of the hook back towards me. That way when I let it go, the hook is pointed away from both my thumb and pointer finger.

Lane when you let the jig go, does the force from the shooting action cause the jig to rotate back towards your fingers? When holding it as you say would mean the the tail of the jig is pointed at the docks. Does this affect the skipping action of the jig once you've shot the dock?

If u point the bend of the hook toward your target, the hook won't get you when you release it. Dock fishing is my favorite way to fish and I've never hung myself shooting. Also plastics like thump buddies or many others skip better than feather/maribou jigs though either will catch dock crappie just fine

I don't live for the thump, but I sure do like it.

I hold it by the head, hook up and facing the target.

I found a bunch of crappie hanging out under a tree that was hanging over the creek, so I had to shoot the jig under the branches.

I have done it several ways...I started out the way fishbonz recommends, but have ended up holding it by the head with the hook bend pointed toward where I want the jig to go and the head pointed at you...doesn't make sense till someone shows you then it makes perfect sense...There are some really good dock shooters out there that can give you advice (try eric or Jigum or Chuck), i am not one of them...but I haven't hooked my self, either (so far)
I guess Someone will have to show me the correct way then. hmmm
Hey Just because I don`t do it like everyone else dosen`t mean I`m not successfull. There is more than one way to shoot a jig which has just been proven by this post. Some hold it this way some that way some by the eyes some with the hook pointing this way & that.I am no pro but I have shot a jig under a dock or Two myself(lol)

Hold the jig by the head. Tension on the line will yank the hook away before it can get to your fingers!

What line do most people use?

I hold it by the head from the bottom side. The eye and the point of the hook will be towards the dock, away from me. Just like Mr. Chuck Rollins taught me.

I haven't noticed any lack of skipping from holding it this way. One thing I will change though, is my jig head. I like to use a bullet or minnow shaped head, so that the jig really skips.

Oh, and yes, the tail of the jig is pointing at the dock.

Hmmm, funny how everyone likes something different, I like the round heads, the minnow & bullet type seem to dig into the water where the round one seems to skip better. Probably doesn't make a bit of difference.
