How's the "cold" weather fishin' for the panfish? I have had some success on Little Nippers

You don't always need a boat..
But gosh darn it, sure helps!

I hardly ever bother in the winter, there's a reason they are called sunfish. The guys&gals South of Dallas seem to do great yr round though.

on some of the warmer days out here you can still get them biting my newest lure is the lake fork baby shad they seem to get them going when nothing else will only problem is I cant find a way to fish the Texas rigged ( my favorite) and they tend to tear kind of easy , but I have gotten several large greens and some nice bass at the plano creek.

I wish I could find a picture I have , it's a green sunfish it's not really that big but was so aggressive I caught him on a small topwater frog . It was the end of summer I can't wait for it to get warmer to try that trick again . Next to bass topwater sunfish are my favorites.

Sadly all of my big sunnies are from 2011, moved back West last April, so I haven't caught a sunfish in almost a year... Heresy I know. I have caught 14 new species since then (I.e. Bonefish, snappers, grouper, lizard fish, etc).

Total Number of Fish Species Caught: 81 (19 on the fly)
States Fished: 7
Countries Fished: 6

Are you talking about those 1" swimbaits? If so, I have caught some small ones on that.

And about that small topwater frog, you must be using a really tiny frog!

So are Rios only found in the south? I've never caught or seen one in person. If they are, why do you think that is?

Rios are a warm water fish. They cannot survive in a cold climate. The furthest north I have heard of a Rio being caught is Belton. You can find em just about anywhere from Austin to South Texas. Parts of the State with Mild Winters usually hold some good Rios. They are not a native Texas Fish.
