just some info on this park, it used to belong to the corp. of eng. now johnson co. something or another has control of the fees. they charge more for everthing than the corp did. boat ramp fee-5.00, 2.00 per person,i don't know what the camp fees are, i don't plan camping there, no senior citizen discount or anything. it's not that i can't afford to pay these high fees, but for seniors and young folks on min. wage and such, that could be alittle hard. i called my rep. to voice my concerns, thats about all i could do, maybe some other folks may want to also, before more corp. of eng. sell out.

Get the real story first.

Quote:
Hamm Creek Park was constructed as a part of the recreation plan for Whitney Lake in the 1950s. In the 1980s Carlswell Air Force Base used it as a recreational area for military personnel. The park was officially closed in 1990.

Concerned citizens led by Mr. George Wood began the pursuit of reopening the Park in 2003. With the support of City Councils, Chambers of Commerce, Johnson County Judge and Commissioners, State Representatives, Congressmen, and Senators, the United States Army Corp of Engineers began to develop the Park with funding from Congress.

Phase I construction began with roads, boat ramp parking, and dredging of Hamm Creek up to the boat ramp and courtesy dock. Johnson County assumed maintenance and operation of the Park and a ribbon cutting was held in April 2007. Near the completion of Phase II construction, the Park was opened to the public and a ribbon cutting was held May 2008. With Phase III, we have the most recent additions of a new boat ramp, a helipad, and two playground areas.

what i just said is the real story, i used to spend much of my time there when it was free, don't mind paying for the use of the park, but fees are getting too high and dicounts for seniors are and vets are dissapearing. that's my take on it.

costs me 9.00 each trip, can buy a season pass for 90.00 i pay about the same or more depending on where i go.
I will pay that or whatever is charged. just for peace of mine my truck will be there when I get back. Not worrying about crackheads etc.
That park was CLOSED. and a known problem are for the S.O.. if you launched before it closed you were writing off anything left in your truck.
Johnson county took over the park with the approval of the corps. The fees go back to the park and to the employees. The park is still costing us residents as it is not profitable. Very modern very nice and dang nice campsites.

I appreciate what they have done, the bottom line is if you cant pay, don't play.

Kimball Bend used to be the same way when it was free. I gladly pay the fee now.

I understand your point on the fees for Hamm but I'll pay the price for the sake of keeping that park open. I used to launch at Nolan too but it's getting a little sketchy now.

A general warning needs to be posted, the old ramp on the nolan. and that area is methlab central. I love to fish the area but with very high cautions.

like i said, 7 bucks wouldn't hurt me either, but i know some vets with children that should get the discounts not only because they deserve it, but because being on a tight budget is usually their way of life, at least till they get on their feet, if you think they don't, then go hug a root. it's not just about you or the rest of the can afford it people. i'm not that much of a corps of eng. fan, but they aren't as tight as the ham's park. i bet tax dollars payed for that park. that's still my take on it......

I absolutly agree. My statement was simply what I consider valuable to me. As scarry as some of the parking lots are for leaving my hard earned toys purchased with a firemans salary around Whitney I like the security of the "gated parks". But absolutly the great outdoors has been priced out of a lot of peoples reach. I grew up driving around the USA in a station wagon and camping with my family. My parents comment each time they travel now that the fees @ state and federal parks are so high that we would not have got to travel near as much if fees had been what they are now. You go through the gate and get charged for entry fees per head, camping site, launch fees...it does put it out of too many peaples reach. I know not everyone is as blessed(financially) as me. 361V

Whitney Cat, They can't give military discounts because they would go broke giving discounts to all of the other deserving folks. How about local, state, and federal police who risk their lives to serve the public? Firemen do a dangerous public service job. And don't forget the pole climber at NOAA who risks his life so you can have free weather alerts. Oh [censored], I forgot astronauts, postal workers, and social workers who risk their lives each time they make a trip to the "projects". I appreciate the military and the job they do, but they don't do anything above what the other folks do that I listed here. Maintaining a park is not cheap. If you want to use it, then you can help pay to maintain it. Suck on that root yourself.

I was there again yesterday , 9.00 for me and my dad to launch.

I will pay it again. and be happy I was able to go fishing. when I came back my truck and tralier were just like I left em.

That 9.00 is much cheaper than other parks.
