I have a lews tournament pro in the 7.1 gear ratio on a 7' mh duckett micro magic rod and it balances out excellent. I use it for senkos and small texas rigs for flipping. I have used quite a few curado e7s but I like the lews better due to the dual braking which allows for more adjustment plus it fits more comfortable in my hands and is very light.

Lew's new reels are made by pure fishing, take it apart & compare it to a garcia repo that is taken apart...you won't be able to tell the difference. Pure fishing makes Garcia, Lew's, Plfueger, Pinnacle, Bass Pro, H2O, ect...you can get parts for Lew's reels. But the one major commonality with Lews and all the other reels Pure Fishing makes: made in China. ETA: Speed spools made in China and BB1 made in Korea.

I have been having LOTS of trouble with the Lew's tourney pro. It can't cast anything under 3/8 oz. And unlike most reels where you should lower the brakes on a light lure, you have to tighten them or else I backlash everytime. Also the centrifugal brakes suck. I know you are supposed to put either 2 or 4 on at a time, but I can't even put one on or else I cast only about 20 feet and then it abruptly stops. Also, the mag. brakes are so weak that I have to put them on 7-10 for any lure. This reel has disappointed me so much after seeing to many great things about it. Unfortunately, this happens to me a lot. My last reel was a old bantam curado which could not cast light lures either.
Can someone please help me? Am I right about having to put on less brakes for a 1/4 oz. lure? If so, then why do I backlash doing so?

There could be a lot of reasons for that.
1. Line size 2. Rod action 3. Improper adjustments to the brakes

Some reels are better used for light applications. Sounds like that lews reel is not good for that. I've has a few bass pro reels like that where it was super on larger baits and I couldn't get it set on light baits.

I got some bad news at Academy Sports when I went to return it today. They have taken them all off the shelf and shipped them back to the warehouse. I had him check some other locations and it's the same deal.
They sold me a REVO SX (RVO-HS)for $127 and gave me a gift card for the rest.

This REVO casts pretty good. I took it out and tossed it around this little pond we have.
But the LEW'S did too.
Another thing that bugs me is that I turn off the spool drag almost all the way to free spool and the one on the side to 5. I use my thumb to control the speed in casting so I don't get the big deal about the special drag systems. I never use them anyway.
