Some really good info here. Thanks to all!
Ernest, this is probably stupid, but I have a question about depth markings on your line. Do you have to re-mark after a few jig changes? It seems like after cutting the line a few times, the measurements would be off.

When I'm fishing open water or rock piles on the bottom, I have noticed that light line does better for me. And when I'm casting or shooting with my 5' 10" light rod with a little Cardinal 401 spinning reel on it, I have way too much fun with light line to want anything bigger on it. 8 lb Pline CX is usually light enough for me. Its .009" diameter is as small as many 6 lb lines.
But if I'm fishing timber, I'm using 15 lb EZ Braid. For bridges and docks, and spring bobber fishing in shallow water, it's usually 10 lb Big Game.
I think you just have to experiment to find what you like best for your style of fishing.

Is it ok to mark a brush pile with a buoy? and how do you keep from catching catfish and carp and sand bass when all I really want are some slabs?

Toss your marker to one side and remember where the brush pile is in regard to that marker.... Good luck not catching other species... That's what makes Crappie Fishing like Christmas.. Never realy know what it will be until you get it to the surface.... I use 12# chart. braid with a 2' leader of 10# clear mono. when I change jigs or break off I only lose about 1/2" of leader so the marks stay pretty accurate for a long time. Works well for me. The braid marks really well. I color about 6" of line so I can see it easily.

Bob, No, I don't use braid for dock shooting. I perfer 6# Trilene clear blue. Braid is a little too soft to shoot docks and it has a tendency to 'float' to 1/16 oz jig.

Me too. Dock shooting is best done with 6# mono. Also when casting a jig around rocks or hydrilla I prefer mono.

Good post. Like Ernest said, always learning.
Personally, I like the top down approach. Crappie see upward and strike upward. Bigger fish are typically higher in the water column.
I learned to use jigs when I finally left without buying minnows.
I still prefer mono. 6 lb on my little kid poles and 10 lb on my 8 and 10 ft rods. I tried braid last spring and didn't like it. I may try it again on a day I am catching a lot. The max depth I have ever fished for crappie was 39 ft deep in dead of winter. Most of tome 10-15 ft down. On 10lb mono there's not that much line stretch at that depth to me, but do what works for you.
I no longer use shakespear bait casters for my 8 ft jig poles. The side of that reel opens up. No big deal. A lot of brands do. For God knows what reason, sometimes on. Hook set, my other hand would hit the side of that reel and knock the cover off sending the spool flying out across the boat. I did this 5 times and lost the fish. I know this is my issue and example of do what works for you.
I think my biggest hurdle as a beginner was real estate - location, location, location. Over 10 years I now have 200 waypoints on my home lake and know what time of year to go to which ones, but I still learn and not always 100% right so I continue to learn. I love it. When I fish, I am not stressed about work, home, or anything. I'm thankful to have a passion for something that gets me away from it all. +1

Me too. Dock shooting is best done with 6# mono. Also when casting a jig around rocks or hydrilla I prefer mono. Why mono on the rocks/hydrilla? Ernest I was an early convert to braid and regularly use it on rocks and prefer it in coontail and hydrilla plus I really like some of the smooth new braid offerings, which divides the lines between braid vs mono, in fact, I haven't used mono in years...of course, I haven't done any dock shooting since I left Eagle Mountain, where I learned the art (to some degree) and always used mono for docks because it didn't catch/hang/snag on poles or brace timbers as much as braid does...but your mono on rocks/hydrilla comment has me wondering what I am rationale I am not getting? Thanks in advance.

For casting I just prefer the smoother feel of the mono in the rod eyes.

The only thing that i think needs to be added to the list is...the right equipment. For the life of me, I will never understand why a person that is just getting into crappie fishing will go out and buy the shortest, lightest, most "buggy whip" rod that they can find. I watched a guy fishing last weekend with one of the aforementioned rods, and also watched him loose three really good crappie, back to back to back, because his rod wasn't strong enough to keep the bigger fish out of the brush. Another 'list' favorite is the bad habit of buying very light line, thinking that you have to have 4# test to catch crappie. For years now I have used nothing but 10# braid with a 12# leader, and somehow I still manage to catch about all the crappie I want to catch.
Just my .02 cents.......... Ok, guy, ernest, and DWMoore...I have never used a mono leader...I tie braid directly to the jig...seems like adding a leader is defeating the purpose of the benefits of braid...Please advise.
