From what I've heard, the material used cannot be re-bored or sleeved. This material was used due to its weight advantages. Had to be very light weight to make the motor competitive with 2 strokes

His motor is not broken in yet or has been broke in incorrectly. You are correct they don't "make oil" the rings are not completely seated and fuel is getting in the oil. He needs to put in new oil, and break it in by running it hard for long periods. Check the oil every time he goes out and it will stop. It took mine about 50 hours.

I got 11 hours on mine now. Had the oil changed at 6 hours and it had made oil. Was told to run it like I stole it,,and I did just that on Amistad for 4 days. Dang that was fun,,,
I was told the same thing-

Fact: It's powerhead uses plasma fused sleeveless cylinders instead of steel sleeves. Thus they cannot be honed or "re-sleeved." This was also done to reduce weight and increase displacement. If an internal mechanical fault occurs in the combustion chamber that damages the cylinder walls, It cannot be repaired.

I'm not saying they are a bad motor at all. With proper break-in and maintenance they are great. Just replying to a previously asked question with a factual answer.

Alex I wasn't disputing the fact its a throw away. I was responding to the two or three that has no experience or knowledge of the motor. We are fixing to see if they will hold up as warranties are starting to run out on the '10 models(mine included) and to repower is very expensive.

Wrong, not the SHO.

So I guess the "as long as there isn't too much damage done part" means nothing to you

I was lucky when I got mine. They had a 5 yr special at that time.

With any 2 or 4 stroke engines, broken rings which gouge cylinder walls is not uncommon and easily repaired (didn't say cheap)in most cases. With the SHO, if that happens, it's time for the scrap pile.

I guess my definiton of "rebuilt" must mean something different than yours. Guess your rebuilt means new block with the old parts around it. Mine means the same block bored out with new guts. Guess you say Toemahto and I say Tomato? Anyways carry on.

Pretty expensive disposable motor. For someone that keeps a motor for twice or 3 times the length of the warranty, it would be a pretty expensive roll of the dice.

Imagine that. A bunch of hearsay by people who don't work on them or worse, own them or have any first hand experience.

To the OP- Your friend is an idiot. I'd make sure not to take his advice on fishing because he's probably got some really terrible ideas as well. I don't understand why people make such bold claims off of things they know nothing about. Oh well.

You guys are bringing up good points. I am retiring next year and plan on buying a new boat and keeping it a long time. That is why I need to make sure and select a tried and true motor. I don't need a 20 footer but I do want a nice rig with ample HP.
I'm almost scared of the SHO because of the replacement cost if something went wrong after the warranty expired. I see some pretty new sho's for sale with new powerheads on them.

After hanging around the idiots I run with, it's nice to hear from a few intelligent people. I treasure your opinions.
