#1 Thinking that a jig needs action to catch fish. Jig is the name of the lure, not the way you fish it. Stop the fast up and down "Jigging". Holding it still will produce more strikes by far. If that doesn't work try slowly (very slowly) raising or pulling up the jig a few feet.
#2 Forget fishing from the bottom up. Fish from the top down. I start fishing most of the year 12' deep, regardless of the water depth. My line is marked at 12', 17' and 22'before I leave home. (Obviously this won't work in spring when fishing shallow.)
#3 There's nothing wrong with minnow fishing. If you want to learn to jig fish, leave the minnows at home while you are learning. Otherwise you will not try hard enough to ever learn. Personally I am convinced that jigs will out catch minnows most of the time. So why bother.
#4 Fish slower faster. While fishing a spot, fish slow but don't stay long if you don't get bit or they stop biting. Usually 5 min. is long enough.
#5 (Maybe should be #1) Don't take everthing (I and other so called experts tell you) literally as gospel truth. We're still learning too and all the rules and methods don't work some of the time.

Good info, sometimes when I am jog fishing and it slows down, I put on a minnow and leave the jig sitting still, I get as many bites on it as I do the minnow,

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

On a day with a little wind,I put a jig under a float and let the waves do the work.Heavy wind,no,but light wind makes that jig come alive just like a minnow.

Well said!! I started catching fish on jigs when I figured out #1 and learned how to fish where the fish are at.
