For safety in the winter I added the YakGear outriggers. I know it makes me look like an old grandpa but they are stable and don't slow me down.(My sit in is built for speed but I'm not) They can be placed up and I can unpin them and have two extra rod holders. We troll for Hybrids and do quite well with the riggers down even in the waves and wakes.Sorry you tipped in but I have been there done that and I am really sorry you tipped in cold water.

It doesn't make you an old grandpa. It shows you have great wisdom. And know your limits. thumb

Get those rod holders plugged and get back out there Dustin. This woulda been a lot worse if the wind would have been calm and we woulda went to where I wanted to go. I don't know how we could have gotten the yak from the middle of the cove to the bank with it full of water. By the way, the fishin was good for me today in the same area you went over. I'll put a pic or two up in a bit

I'm ready to get back out there. I went to a small lake by my house today for a few hours after church, and got skunked. Need to get those things plugged for sure!

Could have been worse. I fish rivers alone during wintertime, but I wouldn't risk a lake in February alone. Big difference between the two.

I've been wet and cold plenty of times but I seldom fish open water lakes. My Old Town Loon (sink) has never rolled or even come close with it's low center of gravity. SOT yaks do tend to have a higher sitting center of gravity and if you get far enough off center you are going over and out with your gear.. Always wear a PFD especially in cold weather and deep water!

I haven't tried it, but I'm told that the two-part epoxy sticks that you break off a section and knead the two parts together will adhere to a kayak hull for an emergency repair. The stuff sets up pretty quickly, and you can use it wet or dry. I know that Walmart carries it in their marine products section. If anybody can confirm that it will adhere to a kayak hull, that'd be a handy piece of information.

Jim, that stuff (JB Weld) is great! My kayak wouldn't float without it. thumb Once upon a time my kayak launched itself from J racks at 55 mph and did a back flip nose plant before righting itself and coming to a skidding stop bottom side down. Three tubes of JB weld fixing holes top side and on keel and I was back on water the next morning. I wouldn't consider it a permanant fix but having used it so many times repatching my keel, I trust it...

most of the time.

Just little guys for me but had a great time and made 3 new fishing buds. Can't wait until next time.

Hmmm.... I never thought about JB Weld. The stuff I have comes in a long cylindrical shape; the outer part and the core are different. You break off a section and knead the two parts together. It sets up a lot faster than JB Weld. If I can remember (at my age memory is a fragile thing) I'll get the name of it next time I'm at Walmart. It would be pretty easy to carry for emergency repairs.

Waterweld is the name of one of the products.
