I just retired from the army and looking for some tips locating catfish on belton lake. I am new to cat fishing and am prettey much clue less. have a boat so getting around the lake is not a problem. Or if some one cares to go out with me sometime just pm me. Chemdawg, thank you for service to our country. I am going to post a link and it is a long read. It helped me quite a bit in the beginning and there is a lot more info in it than I can explain. I hope it helps. If I was closer I would fish with you. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...er_#Post5525092

Ok here is the main thing ....water temp, water temp, water temp and then cover. Standing timber is key. The sand flats is not necessarily the idea location now. The fish will be around timber in the warmest water you can find. On Belton right now I would be in Owl creek, Bull Creek or up above 36 bridge on some timber. Chum with sour grain and use punch bait or fresh shad. Depending on water temp the fish could be in 20 feet or more for several more weeks. I just saw Weldon Kirks post on another forum. He is catching lots of fish shallow on Fayette county and Sommerville. But remember Fayette is a power plant and Sommerville is shallow compared to Belton.

I agree with jdr, i was out in the kayak a couple of weeks ago just throwing worms and cut bait and my buddy and i got into them, 15-16 total for the day fishing around the trees all along the lake, we would stop fish for a bit then move. We launched at leona park and paddled down that side of the lake to skiers alley. I also had fresh minnows i was using to try and catch crappie but managed blues instead lol.

When I fish for hybrids on Belton, I catch catfish If you have problems catching them using traditional catfish methods, don't over look slow drifting live bait at what ever depth you are marking fish. Seems to work for me on those whisker critters

I went out to the sand flats yesterday and got skunked. I tried chumming with sour Milo and cotton seed cake and still nothing. make sure you don't chum to much. Otherwise they will get full on the seed cake and soured grain. I promise you that.

Chemdawg, have you been lately? Are you only fishing Belton? What are you using for bait? I'm in Harker Heights and only fish for cats. That doesn't mean I know what I'm doing, I just like eating them. Keep us posted and we'll try to help. I'm starting to hit the little "lakes" on Ft. Hood with little to show.

Caught a 10lb flathead last night on cowhouse creek. R&R bank fishing. Live bait fish. Hope things get better. Took me 4 days to find a fish.

Omorgma, I took my son to the pond near range control late last yr. Can't think of the name this second. It's catch and release only and we caught some nice fish. Might want to try there also. we had a blast. Crappie, cat, bass all on worm. It was almost too easy.

AS a whole I have fished Belton 50+ years and it still sucks. If the bite is on you better stay with them .Belton is a very hard lake to pattern.
