Lots of fisherman on the Yegua today. I saw about a dozen kayakers and several more in john boats. It's a little tougher to get the john boats into the creek but today demonstrated that it can be done! Most everyone caught some fish and I heard two reports of limits being caught earlier in the week. All but one of the whitebass we caught and kept were males. The lone female was slim compared to the bigger males.

This is a great opportunity to use your kayak and catch some fish!

Guys and Gals,
I'm firming up some details for another get together Saturday February 9th @ Nails Creek Park. I still need volunteers in all areas of outdoor activities..

I've named the event Fish Camp 2013 - fish fry and potluck social where attendees can learn about fish biology & fishing the creeks from area experts. Dip a paddle or two learning to kayak and canoe. Show off your camp cooking skills and join in the feast of fresh fried fish! Stay past dark and gather around the campfire for some real good clean family fun.

I have a few volunteers committed already but always need more. If you have a interest in any area of outdoor adventure or are skilled in something camping/fishing related your help will be much appreciated. Wouldn't it be cool to end the day around a campfire listening to stories and campfire songs.. pickers and singers here's your chance!

Last March five guys joined me on a tough kayak drag to the creek, 2 from College Station, 1 each from Pflugerville, Houston, and San Antonio for a day trip! Yes some of us are just crazy enough to do that in a day!

The Nails Creek Park Fish Camp 2013 event Saturday 10am-dark-thirty February 9th is good to go weather willing...

We need more adult volunteers to help with a few of the duties and programs for the day. Just being there on Saturday is good enough but if you can help out in any way it will make the day even better!

Knothead University all about knots (fishing and otherwise)

Flying Tyers fly tying demo and workshop (BVFF)

Kayaking general rigging and fishing

Fish fry 2PM until we run out of fish! (BVFF?)

Hike to Overlook Point leaving at 10:00am & 2:00pm (approx. 3 mile round trip)

Inland fisheries program (TPWD inland fisheries)

Geocache program (hopefully the Brazos Valley Geocachers will help with this)

Park amenities program- Campsites, creeks, trailway, recreation areas, bank fishing access. (TPWD)

Paddle Program - canoe and kayak basic instruction (TPWD & others)

Kid Fish at the pond? (TPWD & others)

Campfire chaos - Fun around the fire! Storytelling and conversation, roasting marshmallows to end the day.

Somebody must have warned the fish! It was a very slow day fishing the Yegua Saturday. No one we talked to caught much of anything.

I had the pleasure of fishing with a veteran Thursday and the good fortune to find a few fish willing to come home with us too! Vet Raul and I took our time paddling up the Yegua finding the fish on the first brush we dropped a line down into.

Wintertime crappie will often hold tight to structure adjacent to deeper water or the edge of a drop off. Whitebass when they are in the creeks often do something similar but it's usually more about the current and depth and not so much the brush. Bass are also more skittish and will flee to safety if pressured or startled. Crappie often will hold tight to the brush even after a few have been pulled skyward to the big frying pan in the sky. Thursday the whitebass were hanging where we usually catch crappie and falling prey to dead-stick jigging, a tactic usually best done for crappie.

After last Saturdays humbling day of tough fishing I remembered to bring my depth/fish finder on this trip up the creek. I use fish-finder when I need to locate the structure in the deeper parts of the creek. It really helped on this fishing trip!

No matter the reason it was nice to find and catch the fish on a beautiful winter day in Central Texas and to say thanks to an American Veteran and new friend Raul.

Nice report. It's a bonus when you can catch multiple species of fish with the same fishing method.

I have a fish finder but have no idea how to rig the thing up on my kayak. Guess I need to find out.

I just let the transducer dangle from the rope handle on the tip of my yak but I've been thinking of putting on a piece of PVC pipe and using it like a wand.
