My approach is pretty simple: Points or pockets.I let the season and water temp dictate where I start on a new body of water. I always stick with lures I have confidence in.
Summer/winter= points/off shore. Deep crankbaits,Trig,Crig, Football jig
Spring/fall=pockets Shallow Crankbait, spinnerbait, wacky worm, fluke

Learn how to study a map.Contours when they close to each other is is a drop off , far apart a flat or shallow. That way you can plan a head where you should fish. Water temp, clear or stained muddy etc. Time of year, moon faze, Deep or shallow, wood, rock, rip rap or grass.Ask your guide to show you about reading your map. Have fun !

Lots of good info here guys! Even when you've been fishing for a while you can still forget some fundamentals that can help you catch fish. Often times I know we get caught fishing a point then just drift along fishing away to the next point just throwing just to throw.... Watching depth, time of year, water temp, structure.... all the difference in the world.
If you ain't first you're last.

I think you have to think like a fish. I have spent countless hours studying books and video but conditions can change in a 5 minute window. Throw a variety of baits that cover different levels in the water column. Determine A) Are the fish loose to cover and roaming B) Tight to cover and neutral to negative. Once you decide to look at color... In my opinion going from a clear body of water to a stain, you aren't picking random bright colors but if you look at your forage whether it be a crawfish of threadfin shad or whatever else, you just take a few basic tones that are already there and you enhance them.

get as much info as possible and sift thru the BS. Then apply what will work for your experience level at the time. (just my Opinion)

first of all dont buy lures that look good to you stick to the basics like colors of things youve seen in wild life or the water yourself most lures are made for the fisherman not the fish

Rock you've got that right! the reason my tackle company didn't make more money than it did was that my lures caught fish. I spent my money on quality components rather than fancy packaging. One of the major reasons it's no longer in business.

almost for got, if you want to sell lures you've got to convince the fisherman to buy, I haven't seen any fish spending money!
