I have a 30 ft-lb trolling motor on my 8' buster. To increase range and speed, what size gas engine should I consider? How much faster will I be able to go? Thanks.

A 30lb TM should be just fine for a buster

I have a 2.5 Merc on my 10' pelican. I can do 5 mph on calm water with me and my 10 year old son. These smaller motors sip gas and can go a couple of miles on 1/3 gallon of fuel. Look for an outboard with a built in gas tank, this will save you room in your boat. My 2.5 weighs only about 30 pounds, this factors in when loading and unloading and overall weight of your boat. Also, I've learned with an outboard on the back of your boat the boat will track straighter when using your trolling motor up front. Since you will be using your trolling motor less, you battery life will increase. I've been able to downsize my battery size. I use the smaller deep cycle battery, this will save you on room and your back.

Check the coast guard plate on your boat for max size.

I would have also suggested the weight savings of the battery would outweigh the advantages of the gas motor. I had no idea a 2.5 hp motor weighs the same as a large marine battery. I just got myself a new twin troller x10 and a gas motor is now something I will definitely look into.

Take it easy there friend, I was just bumpin' this thread up so you could get more folks to read it.
Clearly the answer to your question is what Dan702 posted. What more do you need than that?
Mike Holder looks like a guy that takes his buster down river and I wanted to chat with him about it. I might want to do that some day.
