You landed in a good area....the lakes around you LOP, Millwood,
Wright Patman, etc. produce some of the biggest crappie in the state.

Welcome to Texas!

Thank you all for the advice and warm welcome. I know I landed in a great fishing area - wish I had landed here to retire rather than go back to work so I had the time to enjoy it all! Maybe in a few years.

I have never really fished a smaller power plant lake for crappie but have always heard they are not as good as cold water lakes.

Yep, I can give you some information on Lake Wright Patman, I grew up fishing on that lake....used to drag limits of barn doors in a couple hours fishing. Click on my crapicat icon, send me a private message...in the next few days, I will take out my lake map and give you some of the old holes info...folks round there (my relatives/friends) wouldn't give you the time of day cause you are from Missouri and they want you to show them you can fish!!! he he, seriously, I can pull my maps, call a few of the old folks to remind me of some of the better "family secret" areas we used to fish and I will fill you in...Hey, dare me and I may just try to show up and go out fishing with you. Most of my crappie mentors are dead now, only some cat men are left, but I fished with whoever had room in the boat or tent...so i can still get considerable info to help you have a productive first year there....Oh, and there was never any need to drive all the way to lake of the pines, or mill wood cause we had the best crappie size/numbers anywhere...don't know if it is still that way, but my bet is that it is..that lake has always been a crappie mill..The also tell me that Cooper is turning into a pretty good lake, although I have never fished it. Of course, this information will REQUIRE that you keep me up to date on your excursions....Later

You'll probably find out that lots of folks fish out of Mauldin and Herron Creek, or put in there and go to the 'river' on that side. My Pop lives over there, in Marietta. Folks have already said it will be good come March and that equals crowded. There's another chap on here of late that's been fishing and writin' a report now and then too. Do a little searching and you'll find him. I think pepop named every mud hole in that part of the country, except for Cooper within the '3 hour tour'. it's got 'em too. It's also full of whites and hybrids, and not crowded. There's a guide there, Tony Parker, does a lot of hybrid guiding cause he's good at it. He was starting to do some for crappie last year if I recall. Welcome to TX as other's have said and good luck to ya.

Sounds like you have been there a time or two..One of my mentors still fishes catfish there, I have fished both crappie/catfish there from time to time...you have to pay attention to the water flows there, though.

Yep, fished there a few times with dad. Last time was October. We did all right. I like fishing there. It's a nice break from the wind we usually have here at LL, Ray Bob and others.
