This question comes up EVERY Prespawn/Spawn time of year and you rarely see any "black spot" questions any other time of the year. So I am going to still maintain that it is a hormonal thing related to the spawn. I see it mostly in the bucks.

The state of Pennsylvania did a study on bass with black spots and determined it was a parasite.
I read another one on gold fish with black spots and they determined it was caused by high ammonia levels in the water. They called it ammonia Burn......

I don't doubt that spots have cleared up after the fish was in a livewell, but the fish I posted in that picture on the previous page was caught at 8AM and weighed at 330PM. The pic was taken by a TFFer right after weigh in and right before I released it.

Too bad the spots don't add weight. I catch them all the time like that, when I catch them.

I just watched a video a couple of days ago and Shaw Grisby said that you only really see it where there's a healthy population of bass.

The black spots are tattoos, they get them from the redfish down on the coast.
