You can camp on the beach at Sea Rim State Park or the public beach further west.

You won't be getting away from civilization camping at San Luis pass. It's a popular spot for people to go and get drunk and rowdy and what not.

I second Bolivar Peninsula. Get the $10 permit and you can camp anywhere on the beach (think 27 miles was the official length). The further north you go on the peninsula the less crowded it is and the better the fishing. The northern part is what's called High Island.

Oh and to get to Bolivar you can take the ferry from Galveston or go east on I-10 to Winnie and head south till you see the ocean!

Camping is easy on the beach from San Luis to Freeport. Our favorites are Matagorda or PINS.
