Hopefully others did better than we did! We fished hard and Anthony caught one LMB. I didn't even get a bite. We fished NB, Nails, Cedar(ncp) and the spillway with jigs and live minnows. I kept blaming it on the pressure and the fact that it was 30.3ish all day.....but who knows?

The creeks are setup real nice right now... One flood will get things going for sure.

Newmans looked really good today but just couldn't get anything to hit.THe water is still muddy so hopefully when it clears up The fish will move up and bite.If we could could get just one good storm that will set things off.

Well that's not the news that I was hoping for. I can't believe it didn't get out of the thirties at the lake. I live in Waller and it touched 62 here today, and that's why I loaded the kayak and gear. I'm launching out of Nails State Park in the morning. I think I'll try the creek channel in the lake to see if maybe the whites are staging...Lawton

Sorry if I sounded confusing, but when I said 30.3 I was referring to the air pressure...yea it reached 64 degrees by the time we reached the spillway.

Good luck tomorrow!

The weather has been really cold lately. It might take a week or so of warmer temps to get the fish active and moving.

Who knows. I'm sure the muddy water doesn't help the bite either.

Yegua creek whitebass caught January 17,2013. The creek is LOADED with them already!

Thursday's kayak recon of the Yegua resulted in ten nice whitebass from the muddy cold water. I only fished for a little over an hour but that was more then enough time to fill my fish requirement for the trip up the creek. I could have fished more or stayed later but I really just wanted to prove the whitebass had moved into the creek when it flooded.

I kayaked up the creek from the state park taking the shortcut across the flat and then exited the creek from the mouth. Both routes are marked and passable by kayak or canoe but not with a regular motor boat yet. The lake will need to come up another foot before regular boat traffic can pass through the shallow flat were the mouth of the Yegua dumps into the lake.

With no rain in the short term forecast us paddlers can have the creek to ourselves but only if you are willing to work at it a little. If this old man can do it with little trouble then many of you can too!

Sam,
I have to cover all the bases at work for the next week or so because the boss is having a baby, her first... Little Marley is due Saturday wink

If I was going again I'd take the shortcut like we did last March. I've re-marked the trees and you will only need to drag the yak about 50 yards or so over land and maybe a hundred over 6 inch deep water.. easy going compared to last time!
I suppose someone could paddle up the mouth of the creek but the current and shallow water will make it very difficult.

I caught most of the whitebass using a white feather crappie jig dead-sticking about 8 foot down like I was fishing for crappie. I caught the first fish and last few slow rolling a yellow/gold roostertail. Of the five hours or so on the water 3.5 was spent paddling. I finally got on the water around 11:30AM and was off the water by 5:15PM. I didn't start fishing until just after 2:00PM after paddling all the way to the big pipes. Caught the first seven whitebass in about 20 minutes and lost 4 or 5 good ones with one small throwback male. Last fish was a sow and the biggest of the day. I put the tenth fish on the stringer and called it a day. It took about an hour and a quarter to get back to the park boat ramp. A good trip for sure as I saw the eagles, hawks, otter, pigs, deer and many other birds.

I'm confident if I had fished more and paddled less I'd have limited out on whites.. don't know where the crappie went to.. they must have gone into hiding when the white trash bass filled the sand bar wink

Thanks for the report. Sounds like a great time. I hope the Crappie bite returns once the water clears up some.

I fished the yegua today paddling from the Nails boat ramp. Got on the water around 9:30am and the lake was slick. I kept seeing water being pushed by fish in the shallow flats nearing the pullover spot. I was thinking that these were probably carp till I noticed a couple of green backs. I paddled upstream for three hours casting thrice every couple hundred feet practicaly to newmans bottom without a single bump. I talked with a man and his wife that were bank fishing and they indicated we were a couple hundred yards downstream of newmans low water crossing. I paddled back down stream 2 or 3 hundred yards and caught 9 whites in less than 20 minutes in one spot. That spot gave out so I started my return. Caught a good solid 3 lb channel cat and foul hooked a carp around 8 pounds. I can't believe I landed that darn carp on a roadrunner. My oppinion is that the whites are starting to run, the creek is not wall to wall whites but if you can find a pocket the getting is good...Lawton

Rough day today... Late start... broken rod... Spare reel was sticking.... rented yak took on water... and no fish... I hope this isnt an indication of how my fishing season will be.
