Mmmmm. Very nice. I think you have the perfect array for at least 90% of fishing opportunities out there. But now that you are smitten, don't you need a 5,7,9,10,12 and 14 wt? Each with a reel and extra spool with a WFF (not the 14)and sinking or sink tip line mounted? Kidding - well done. cool

To me, they are the 16 gauge shotgun of fly fishing. A sweet spot that doesn't get the popularity it deserves.

Grant:

Clearly you are on the way down that slippery slope we all warned you about months ago. But to say you have found the "missing link" implies that your "chain" of rods is now complete. I must agree with Jimlakeside on this one.

I'm sitting here in my Tying Room realizing I have a real storage problem with my fly rod tubes, but also see a brand new tube that magically arrived via UPS late last week. It's a Sage 00 weight TXL and was a "missing link" for me, filling a slot between my 000 weight and 0 weight rods.

I have been steadily building on Batson rainshadow blanks. So far I have a 5wt, 7wt, 8wt, and a 10wt. Just got back from a weekend on the Guad and the 5wt threw like a dream. An absolute pleasure to throw. Plannning on filling in the blanks (literally) with a 4wt, 6wt, 9wt, and maybe a 12.

Grant, it's not like you haven't been warned...

But seriously, it's also one of the safer, healthier, more enjoyable ways to empty your wallet.

Mybrain..

Congrats on building a rod that "threw like a dream." That's got to be a very satisfying feeling.

On the subject of rods...I have a bunch but I seem to have an 8 wt. fetish...I'll confess to 5, of varying lengths, actions and number of pieces...anyone else get that with a particular weight rod? cool

I don't know Mick. Figuratively, too much fly equipment has made it pretty hazardous around my house. wink And then literally, I've stupidly put myself into some precarious situations to get a drift over some distantly rising trout, or found myself up a creek canyon with sheer walls, still trying to get to "the good section above the falls".

I think the reason people often stick with odds or evens is that 1 weight really isn't all that much of a difference, so if you're having to consider budget (like me), you just skip it until you get really into it. The length makes more of a difference to me than a line weight. A 7wt was my first rod and I still love a 7. My XP feels more like a 5 and can chunk some line. I started odd and then added evens in the heavier weights. Now I'm considering a 4wt... rolleyes

A four weight is a great rod to consider. My first rod was a 9ft 6wt, my second an 8ft 4wt, and my third an 8'8" 2 wt, followed by an 8wt. After that, the odd/even system broke down.

But I do agree that length is also an important consideration, as is material (graphite vs fiberglass vs bamboo).
