I'm 5'9" and don't have an issue using a 7ft rod but I don't jerk downward I usually jerk sideways keeping the rod tip about 8 inches above the water. If a fish hits mid jerk that way I can use the same motion in a sweep style hookset and start reeling.

I'm offended that you didn't ask me?!!??!?!? You use spinning rods mostly.... and I dont like how that fishes. Please accept my deepest apologies jerkbait master.  I switched to a 6' spinning rod this rear....lots less fatigue on the wrist!

I'm 5'10" and like said I jerk down but not straight down. Keep rod tip right off the water the whole time
I can backlash toilet paper.

How tall are you guys using a 7' rod? I'm just a about 5'10-5'11 and I'm always hitting the water on a down jerk. Thats why ive been debating a 6'6 to 6'8 rod. I use a Loomis NRX 9' 8" Super Heavy Duty Surf Special but you probably couldn't handle it either....

Just bought a st croix legend tournament jerkbait rod. 6'8 M, fast tip. One heck of a warranty and most importantly made in the USA!

Just bought a st croix legend tournament jerkbait rod. 6'8 M, fast tip. One heck of a warranty and most importantly made in the USA! The 6'8" St. Corix rods are medium power extra fast action. I own Three: LS68MXF, LC68MXF, and AC68MXF. LS=Legend Elite Spinning, LC=Legend Elite Casting, and AC=Avid Casting. I also own an AC62MXF, and an AVC80MXF. I have gotten to really love my AVC80MXF. It can cast a 5" Fluke, or Senko a loooong way. TFP
