I bought labels and with perm sharpie marked it. however, ink rubbed off within a week of use where I couldn't read. I'm now going to try labels underneath the reels rod base. that way protected from water and friction. we'll see how it works.
FYI I can't tell difference by eye between 12-14-15-17 Invizx.

All great suggestions. I also use a lable maker and put it on the sideplate of the reel. That way, I can move the reel to a different rod if I want and the line size and type goes with it instead of staying on the rod itself.

I use 10 & 12lb P-Line, 12 & 15lb invizx and 8/30 braid.
You can tell the difference by looking at it.

You don't need a label maker. Go to any store and look in the school supplies area. They sell sheets of little square stickers for labeling. That's what I use.

Go to office supply and get some stick on price tags. Write the date and line on the tag and stick it on the o/s of the reel.

I have rods for the specific tasks. They get the line I like for that particular function. When you only use 8 or 12 lb mono from 1 brand, it doesn't get too complicated.

It's easy for me to remember based on the rod and reel set-up. They only get one type of line each so there's never a question.
I use 8 rods though. If you have a 20 rod rotation or something, I can see how that might get confusing.
I don't know how well a little sticker would work on mine unless you concealed it pretty well.

Easy for me....
If the reel has mono, it's 25lb test. If its braid, it's 65lb test. Problem solved.

Just get the label material for the Brother label maker. Use a fine point permanent marker to write on this material.
I write down the date I re-spooled the reel (baitcaster) or spool (spinning) as AL for the month (A = January, B = February,... L = December). AZ plus AE with a dot over these letters, and the last two digits of the year. AZ for days 1 through 26 and the dotted letters for days 2731. All of these letters are uppercase
Next is the pound test in which is just one or two numerals. 8 for eight pound test, 14 for fourteen pound test, etc.
Finally, I have company which is done in the first lower case letters.
Examples: u = Sunline, g = Seaguar, v = Silverthread, M = Mason, T = Trilene, P = Power Pro, D = Daiwi, n = Stren, and so forth. Note that if I use the first letter it is upper case as the first letters of these brands capitalized due to the brand names being proper nouns. For those brands that I use a letter other than the first letter of the brand name I use a lower case letter to designate these brands.
With the type of line from a particular company with a second lower case letter.
Examples: Seaguar InvizX = sx, Sunline Sniper = up, Sunline Shooter = uh. Note that I use p in prefrence to n for Sniper because a p is less likely to be mistaken for an h, and vice-versa.
So if I have say 12 pound test P-Line CX Premium on a reel, and I put this line on the reel on October 18, 2011, I would maker the label as: Jr11-p12. The J being for October, the r being for the 18th, the - for P-Line, and the p being for CX Premium. For CXX extra strong P-Line I use an x.
The up side of this method is that it is very compact. The down side is that its not as transparent to others as more conventional methods, and sometimes it takes a bit for me to remember how this code works.
After making up the label I adhere it to the inside of the spool bell on spinning reels, and onto the bottom of the reel seat mount on baitcasting reels.

I buy a combo color pack of the elastic hair bands and select a color for each pound test I use. Then I simply wrap the bands on the rod handle, EASY. As far as dating it, I don't bother. I put my rods in the house in the heat of the summer and learned to stay away from certain brands where the line starts to fail excessively fast (BPS and Cabelas, for example). For the most part, I can get away with replacing my line every 6 months. I also put backing so that can fill 3 reels with one 200 yard spool. Now if I'm fishing Fork or areas where the line is getting abrasions more than normal, I of course cut line off and replace the line more regularly.

I really think they have medication for this sort of thing. I know they have it for those of us that got to "A-L" and stopped reading.
