[quote=fishernoob]Gulp New Penny 4in with chartruese tail. Rig it using a worm hook to make it weedless.

I like that weedless set up. When I was fishing last time, I had to clean my hook after almost every cast. Even on the top of the water my treble hooks were collecting floating grass. Seems like this would work for the other soft baits too.

What is that? Maybe a 5/0?

They dont do it often but they will jump out of the water on bait.... Flounder will do the same thing. Most of the Reds I have seen leaping out of the water usually have a Shark right on there butts LOL. I have had several in all my years leap over a topwater bait. Does not happen often but they will from time to time.... Here is a pic of a jumping Red taken by JPChavez

AP, were those redfish tailing or trying to escape?

What a great pic.

I know there were loads of baitfish all around me. Even had a dolphin in the shallows half way out of the water chasing after food. That was pretty awesome to see.

JP Chavez is quite a fisherman. I believe fish in that picture were feeding as well.

southtex, that weedless setup w/the new penny shrimp is Texas rigged & is very efficient, when you buy any soft bait just compare it next to a package of hooks to find the size hook you prefer for that bait.

PM me smile

Wouldnt this kill the action of the bait, im just asking not pointing out. To me it looks like it would be stiff and not provide any natural like movement. Can anybody give a little more insight on this please.

No, the tailend is still free to flap in the water.
The tailend is the only part that gives vibration.
Gulp shrimp are pretty stiff IMO

I've fished them with shakeyhead, jigheads, and weightless.
The tail still gives off good action.

If the hook was going through the tail, then it would reduce the action.

Gulf Shrimp are not known for a lot of elaborate actions so the subtle action of the shrimp plastics is fine. They can really scoot in quick short bursts but it happens so fast a quick rod pop mimics this sudden burst perfectly. On soft plastics that do have more action in their design, I tend to go one of two ways.

#1 approach: With no hook past the middle of the bait. Like a jighead with the hook shank with the hook exiting the plastic about half way. I believe the tail of the bait can only give as much action as the last inche or so of the main bait can supply. Wave your hand in the water, only bending at the wrist. Now try while bending at the elbow. Same basic principle with action tail soft plastics.

#2 approach. Weedless/Tex-posed. Weedless jigs and hooks can still give plenty of action if rigged right. The places where the hook enters and exits the plastic make all the difference. If the hook is taking up too much room in the head of the plastic, that can deaden its action. The place where the hook reenters the plastic is going to act like a pivot point so that the plastic before and after that point are flex in opposite directions. If the placement of that pivot point is not right, then you won't have the right balance to get that perfect flex and pivot. Too heavy of a hook can also kill action. Some big and/or stiff plastics can take a heavy hook; some smaller and/or more supple plastics can't.

Just my $.02

Do any of these artificials work better when it is cold? Or do you just change the presentation? Fish it slower?
