Once you buy a lock n haul you will throw your old transom saver away. Those old skool things are worthless.

[quote=ColbyD]I have a Lock-n-haul and dont have any complaints, But how does it take the weight off the transom like the TYPICAL ones you see that wedge up against the trailer? just curious. From what I can see that is a motor support not a transom saver? Looks like the transom would still be flexed from the weight of the engine, where as a transom saver goes against the trailer and supports the weight of the motor. [/quote Agree. Actually the Lock-n-Haul or any other similar 'motor support' is just that. A 'motor support'. It actually creates a fulcrum effect on the transom as it becomes the pivot point for a lever. The 'lever' being your lower unit. You don't hear of many complaints about them, and they are popular, but they do not support the transom. IMHO of course. Be safe out there... Jim

Just think about what your engine and transom go through while running across the lake in a 20 mph wind or more, now think about what it goes through running 70 down a paved highway or 30 down a gravel road. In other words the old style transom savers are really doing you no good, actually they could cause more damage. I see no way the old style transom savers could damage any thing. The boat is strapped down to the trailer and the engine is propped on the trailer as well. So the motor would be in a stationary position will little to no movement whatsoever. Now if the boat wasn't strapped down securely to the trailer and ended up bouncing up and down on the trailer bunks I see how this might be possible. I just dont see how the motor supports offer any support for the transom.

I will definitely say that the newer style looks better and more convenient than the old prop style. So Mark perry you are saying "that the transom no longer needs saving on newer boats"? If thats the case I might just go for one of these new age motor props myself.

No way a small puece of aluminum supports a500lb engine, Besides a transom takes10 times the srress when running on the water.

I would bet more like 100 times more stress on the transom running across rough water than sitting on the trailer driving down the road. I use the Lock-N-Haul but I really like the looks of the Motor Mate. Cool design.

I use the motor mate, there are three or 4 brands that are all good products, they have been mentioned here, just get one that you like and run with it.

Any of the products that secure the motion of the motor to the transom are far better than the traditionally accepted transom bars.
It is simple engineering and physics really. The transom is designed to handle the stress of whatever motor it is rated for. The accepted practice from back in the 80's of useing the transom saver bars was a good gesture at the time, but is not good for the motor or the transom. I know that boat manufacturers still put these on new boats from the factory, but that is becasue it is still the accepted method of trailering the boat and motor.
If you do continue to use the old technology, please do not over tighten it because this will eventually damage the motor pivot bushings and can eventually cause damage to the transom... Just a matter of time if you do.
No I am not sponsored by any of them! But there are only two of the new styles that I would use that completely eliminate potential problems. Motor Mate being the best designed and Swivel-Eze.
Just my 2 cents!!!!

The transom on today's boats do not need 'saving'. An isolated motor that cannot move saves all the bushings and motor mounts on the motor. The old style are almost as bad as not having anything. Maybe worse. They even mess up your lower unit paint.
I personally like the lock-n-haul. But the bottom line is put something on your motor that keeps it from moving.
Last time I checked, to replace upper and lower motor mounts and bushings on a Yamaha 250 cost around $2500. You need to pull the motor on most brands to get to both sets of mounts. Do yourself a favor and get one.
