trying to rig up a trolling motor on my tuna and was wondering if anybody has ever heard of a hand held speed control that could be spliced into the control, so youre not having to reach behind to vary speed and direction.....

I have a 39# thrust MG that I'm going to mount on my Commander 140. I'm going to cut the shaft just above the bracket with the motor at the correct height, and I will extend the wires coming from the motor to the control head so that I can mount the head on the gear track. I will steer it with the rudder controls.

Very nice! I am betting I can mount my Motorguide Wireless W45 on the Big Tuna like that. BigDozer66

Yeah, that's pretty nice. Too bad the video didn't show it in use on the water. That would have been worth the time to produce. I have a PowerDrive 70 on my bassboat, and I don't want anything else.
I'm probably not going to spend much to have a TM on my kayak, because much of my purpose in kayaking was to get some exercise while we are out on the water. Putting the TM on my kayak is just an exercise in "can I do it and make it look good and work well?". I can and I probably will, but it won't be a permanent installation. There are a couple of places I would probably use it, but we're talking 2 or 3 times a year.

I am in the process of mounting a 30lb trust minn kota on mine. I took the control portion off of the main shaft and the internal control unit is small. I will be extending the wiring so I can control from my seat. I am using a waterproof junction box from Lowes as a control box, I will also be installing a killswitch and coming up with a lever that will look like the throttle knobs on a boat. I will be using a cabling wire to controll with my feet. I will post pics when I am done. If you would like more detailed instructions with pics I would be more than glad to send them to you, just shoot me back a post.

My Big Tuna does not have a rudder either. After looking at the way the Motorguide W45 I currently have mounts I am not sure I want to try and mount it on the Tuna. It mostly has to do with the way it deploys and stows and the way the handle operates. Santa might just have to bring me a Minn Kota iPilot for Christmas! BigDozer66

not worth the trouble because once its motorized you have to register it with TPWD and get boat tags.
