Can you catch flounder from the surf? (i.e. Mustang Island State Park). If not, is there another place around the area of Padre Island?

Also, this will really be my first time fishing with jigs for flounder. I'm almost embarased to ask this but how do I work the jig for flounder without contantly getting hung up? Do I SLOWLY reel and hop every now and then? Quick hops, raise and drop, etc??
Thanks

Hey Rod Builder - With the Redtop Sporting Goods, I assume your also from New England? I saw the word fluke and I almost fell out of my chair at work. I LOVED fishing for fluke, and my first fish I ever caught was a winter flounder in Boston Harbor when I was 10

I always fish mud, sand, or light shell so i do not get hung up much. I am assuming you are fishing a rocky area. Usually the flound will hang out on a smooth bottom near structure or rocks. Try to find and area you can do your retreive in that you do not get hung up often. I use a few different speeds on the retrieve, slow, slower, and dead slow lol. Basically though you just need to go slow enough to garentee that the bait hits the bottom before the next jerk. You can use small twiches or medium pulls. I usuallly only let my rod tip travel about a foot per jerk. Sometimes i work it in 3-6" pulls though. I usually only use side pulls, but occassionally try vertical pulls. Just try different things untill you find what is working.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Yes I am originally from MA and did a lot of fishing in Boston and down in Plymouth area. My family has all year round houses across the pond from Whitehorse Beach in Plymouth and my uncle has a house down in Rhode Island on Tiverton Bay. At the end of his house there is a famous Totaug breeding hole. In the fall the Bonito run along the jetties and is great fishing on a fly rod. The Fluke fishing back there is insane and totally different than here. Those fish attack anything that moves with a vengance lol! The pic of the Striper was caught in Quincy Bay on a fly rod. We moved to Virginia this year and from there moved to Texas to stay with the family for my wifes job for a couple of years. They have stripers all year round in Virginia which is nice. One good thing about fishing down here is you don't have to go hooking up Seaworms lol! Those lil buggers bite you hard lol! Do you ever get back up to MA? If so then I could give you some great info on fishing spots.

Tight lines,

Ricky V.

Most of the info i post is just stuff i have learned reading this forum for 2 years and a little bit from personal experience. There are plenty on here that know WAY more than me. Knowing is only half the battle though, i have much to learn in its execution lol.
