Never heard it called a sea ribbon. Only dog fish, and inexperienced people mistakenly call it a lion fish some times.

Never heard it called a sea ribbon. Only dog fish, and inexperienced people mistakenly call it a lion fish some times. That's a sea robin. What people call dogfish or toadfish or oystertoads is sort of similar looking but not the same thing. This is a dogfish, aka toadfish, aka oyster toad, aka oysterfish.

Now that there is what I've always called a sculpin ... gotta love regional/colloquial names, eh?

...that's a DogFish! Be careful when you handle them as they can give you a big hurt!

Ok you are right. Been a few years since I have got a dogfish. Have never caught a ribbon. Learn something new everyday. I know they are poisonous or something, but I am wondering how the poison is distributed? Is it like a catfish or stingray with spines, or is it teeth, or skin?

Toadfish is the proper name, but we call them dogfish. I have caught them fairly often n bays, rivers, creeks. I always use a towel to hold them and unhook. I have never been hurt by one.
Its fun to show them to kids. They think its a MONSTER. lol

I caught something in my cast net yesterday. Either a toad/dogfish or a puffer. Don't really know though because the net got hung up on a rock and I opened it up to get it unstuck and saw it swim out. Definitely was brown and a very round front.

The fish in question is called a SEA ROBIN. It has fins that look like wings and 3 toes on each side that it 'walks' with and beautiful blue/green eyes.

Thankyou everyone for giving your input. Besides finding out its called a sea robin, I also found out that they can release a poison that stings for a couple days kind of like a hard head. People also eat these on the east coast.
Can one become a master at fishing? Pshh... yes...
