My suggestions will tackle staying dry and staying warm.
The most important thing is to stay far away from cotton clothing. I'm sure we've all experienced having wet socks, not good to have that going on all over your body.
Three years ago I learned the importance of layering with baselayers that contain a high percentage of polyester. A friend flipped his yak during winter, his underwear, socks, and baselayers were poly...he dried off really fast and stayed warm the rest of the day once his clothing dried. After that I switched from wearing jeans and cotton baselayers.
One thing that most don't like about polyester baselayers is the cost, but they're worth every dollar! Other than the obvious reasons of warmth and dryness I like wearing them because they're thin, which allows you to remain comfortable.
These baselayers come in different thicknesses, this is where it becomes tricky. Everyone's cold tolerances are different, some like myself stay warm below the waist and cold up top, others may be the opposite or just cold natured. Some companies have different categories and others different weights. I wear cat 3 or midweight...a good paddle store will be able to help you determine which cat or weight.
My baselayers are from Columbia because of the technologies that they incorporate into the baselayers and are as followed:
(Cool mornings warming into the 50's) Midweight top and bottom Regen Rain Pants May start off with a fleece jacket if windy
(20 - 40*) Midweight bottom Extreme top Regen Rain Pants Fleece vest Watertight Jacket
I have fished in temps below 20*, but I hear it doesn't get that cold here?
Hands, feet and your head are really important too!
I like neoprene gloves and gloves where the fingertips are missing. Handwarmer packets come in really handy. I'll put one in each glove and one in each shoe. I wear a mask for my bald head (no cotton) and Aerosole socks which are 75% polyester.
Hope this helps!

After reading this thread, I realized I have probably saved myself an additional $300-$500 on foul weather gear by just buying the Frontier 12. Slicker suit and rubber boots are all you need and that's all I've ever used on any boat.
Just when I think I have found all there is to like about the Frontier..... puh-POW, something else comes along! Paddle on $oggy Bottom Boys! lol

Mentioning dry feet, we just received our first Fall shipment of Chota MucLuc Light Boots. The boots are made with waterproof neoprene, they come up to just slightly below your knee, and have a semi rigid rubber sole. I have the coldest feet in the world and these babies keep my dogs warm and dry all through the cold season. I have two pair and have used my older ones for over seven years. The MucLucs are a perfect cold weather item for SOTs. I personally couple them with Stohlquist Treds waterproof paddling pants. We have never had a pair returned. They are truly warm and comfortable and most have been sold via word of mouth from happy users.

I want a pair but you guys are long ways from me. http://www.mariner-sails.com/partdetail.asp?id=29379http://www.mariner-sails.com/partdetail.asp?id=29492
