We (Myself, 81 year old Mom & Joy) didn't get on the water until 8am. I had been hearing reports that with the cooler water temperatures, the fish (all species) were or would be biting better. Saturday morning turned out to be very gray and overcast and a bit foggy. The water looked good, and the lake level is almost back to normal. It stayed overcast and foggy the whole time we were fishing. Those kind of days it seems like morning all day. We fished until 1:30pm. After catching our shad we tried some drift fishing along brushy creek to no avail. It was more of a folly situation than anything else. I decided for a more peaceful setting (and more fishing), so we headed to the river around palmetto creek. I tried a more stealthy approach, and in lieu of dropping my huge anchor in the fishing area, we tied up to a river channel marker near some stumps. Almost immediately we started catching fish. I started us out by catching an 8 pound blue. Then joy caught a 16" blue. My mom also caught an 8 pound blue cat. I hung two really big fish. One just came off the hook before it surfaced. The other one i made a mistake on. The cast before, i got hung and had to tighten my drag to break the line. I forgot to loosen it back up for fishing the next cast. It felt like i was hung again, and when i started moving back the fish took off for another country. If my drag would have been right, i probably would have landed it, but once he got to the stretching point of the line and the drag set too tight, it snapped. The true highlight of the trip was seeing my mom catch her big fish. It hit hard and fast, ripped drag out and really put up a good fight for her. She was so excited. Her pole was bent in half for about 10 minutes.
