I've got a Lowrance HDS-5 with an LSS-1 attached. I have the HDS-5 2D transducer shooting through the hull for on-plane depth readings and my LSS-1 transducer on the transom for high-def SI/DI readings.

I do not believe that you can shoot through the hull with the side imaging transducer. I have Lowance HDS 8 on the console /and HDS 5 at the bow. I shoot through the hull with my standard transducer but my side imaging transducer is mounted to my jack plate. I am able to keep a good bottom reading thru the hull at WOT on my Skeeter ZX190. I have a second transducer on my trolling motor. Of course all three transducers are networked so I can switch to any of them from either HDS unit.
So many fish, so little time.

My fishing partner has a thru hull SI transducer for his 998csi. It's mounted by drilling a 1" hole through the transom step/setback and its safer than a transom mount because its somewhat protected from impacting stumps and stuff. The only problem was intentionally putting a big hole in his boat. lol

I didnt like putting small stainless steel screws on the tansom. Fiberglass is some tuff stuff. I broke off one stainless screw mounting my hardware for the transucer

I know, mine is mounted on the inside of the jackplate. In my opinion there is no better place. Its protected on 3 sides. . .i just jinxed myself huh?!

Does the thru hull interfere with side imaging? No, Lowrance actually recommends you put them within a couple feet of one another so the 2D/DI overlay feature works right. The real answer is that they work on different frequencies, so they don't interfere. 2D works on 83/200 I believe and SI/DI works on 455/800.
