Good day on the water but this really pissed me off today. 2 dogs stranded on a Mexican island at Falcon. I can't tell you how many stray dogs are wandering around Zapata. You will typically see a handful of skinny dogs roaming the streets when turning into the boat ramp. This is the icing on the cake though. These people in Zapata are the worst pet owners on the planet... Real sad sight... I believe they belong to the netters that run the nets between the islands....I have seen them on the bank with them, still not sure why they are there as they always look like they are in good shape and not starving. Debra This is possible. Although JD has something here. There is a demographic that enjoys the company of animals but cant afford them. Many seem to be here in the border region. They will allow them to roam and will not neauture/spay or vaccinate. Its a shame but it is around. Breaks my heart and it's even worse that I accept it as something I cant change. Dogs are smart! There was one that had pan handeling down. She would run up to a person and sit long enough to see if she gets food. No food and shes out to the next person to repeat her good dog act. She kept a eye out on the ramp area. Looking for new customers. LOL This dog had it down.

It is much more noticeable in Zapata, but I promise you in Houston there are probably 20,000 strays for every 1 you see in Zapata. It is a pretty sad sight though.

People are sorry, it must have something to do with water. Lana Kernan who is probably the nicest person on earth has already rescued a few dogs in the short time they have lived by Hubbard and the other day she found three guinee pigs that some one dumped off at the end of their road. Who the heck dumps guinee pigs on the side of the road?

Debra Debra is correct. I saw those same dogs on that same island back in July. As I fished around the island, I came around the other side and some netters were sitting out of the wind cooking breakfast and mending their lines. The dogs looked healthy enough to me and I expect the netters were feeding them.

On another note, I have never been anywhere that has as many dogs running around stray as Zapata. It is truly unbelievable at times.

I bet they are trying to get out of Mexico too....Has anyone checked their passports? I'm sure those dogs are fine. I know my dog could live off fish guts, bones, ect....she loves that stuff. She once ate a whole 20lb carp....took her days to finish, but her coat was so shiny for months afterwards. BTW dogs can swim.

I thought you were going to show a pic of some of the locals up at arms like a jihad rally attacking an out of towner for turning in a sharelunker.

Nice to see people who really care about animals. Remember though, people in rural communities tend to allow their animals to roam free. Usually they don't have collars or rabies tags attached because its not the law like it is in the cities. Animals that roam will look somewhat malnourished unlike the little fat pooch that doesn't get off the sofa except to use the restroom and eats every meal and doggy treat known to man. I would caution those that take home an animal that you see roaming around, it does not necessarily mean that animal has been deserted. It may be someone's only friend or even a child's favorite pet. Maybe take it to a local shelter to see if someone claims it. If not, leave your contact info and let them know if you would like to adopt it.

All three of our dogs were strays. Seems that if I get to thinking about getting another dog, One just shows up. We can't save them all but we can save a few at a time.

You have to understand the Mexican culture. Pets are the last of there worries. They do not get attached to pets.if there pet needs surgery and it cost money then it's not having surgery. One dog may be the neighborhood dog. But understand this if you don't like it then do something about it. Take the time to drive down to Zapata and donate your time, your money, and your brains to help out. Here's idea put on tournament to raise money for shelter. Now we are about to see how many ppl really care.

Where do you think dogs lived at before they were domesticated? They didn't live in a 3 bedroom house...lol. They were outside in the wild like everything else. Some people go off the deep end over a turd hound. People should be more worried about kids and homeless people instead of a dayum dog.

Plenty of sorry a-holes around the metroplex as well. I live in the country N W of Ft Worth and have taken in dozens of dogs during the last 16 yrs that people have thrown out on the Farm to Market road to fend for themselves. That's we're my fishing buddy below came from Same out here in East Texas. We have a shih tzu that was abandoned who we are trying to find a home for right now. If you want a cute little girl with attitude, PM me.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

Had some dogs on Rayburn swim out to me in Veach. they circled the boat, we tried to get them back on shore but they kept coming out. Turned out they were hog dogs with GPS locators on them. We found the owners a few hundred yards away.
