The brand of boots would be "Korkers"
Great boots. They also make sandles with interchangeable soles.

I tend to over think fishing. Please help me.
When I am over complicating something please kick me in the face. Hard.

I'm personally a fan of upsizing as much as two sizes from my shoe size to my wading boot size. It's worked for me across several brands (LL Bean, Weinbrenner, Simms, Redington) and boot types (felt, studded felt, rubber, studded rubber, rubber with cleats). I do so for two reasons -- first, I find that more room allows for better insulation and reduces the chance that circulation will be cut off by stuffing foot, sock liners, socks and neoprene booties into the boots. Second, I have a very wide foot and most wading boots, like most hiking boots, are made only one (medium) width. The larger boots tend to be wider and more comfortable for a long day in the water. Admittedly, I sometimes feel I walk a bit like Frankenstein, but I'd rather be stable and comfortable than nimble and fashionable.

timeout!

remember: there's a BIG difference between cheap rubber and "sticky" rubber. If you buy cheap rubber soled boots, I promise you'll twist an ankle. Felt always hold the best, but make people angry. "Sticky" rubber is an expensive alternative to felt so many manufacturers are studding 'cheap' rubber for justification. I would definitely check them out in the store.

you may continue...

+1 on the statement by solamisandwich

All rubber is not created equal when it comes to wading boots.

This question was put to Dave Kumlien, President of the Invasive Species Society, in a conference call I sat in on recently. Dave said that studded felt still holds the best, followed by felt. Sticky rubber soles with cleats can approach felt, but is still not quite there. Dave thinks the manufacturers will continue to try to innovate to improve sticky rubber boots, but still have more to do to come up with the right material.

I wore Hodgman felt soles for years, they worked well on the White River in Arkansas but the Yellowstone River in Montana was still pretty slippery.

I bought some Simms Freestone Vibram boots last year and put on the cleats. I have used them on the White and the Yellowstone. The grip is much more secure than my previous boots.

Good information Mick. Unfortunately, the fly fishing boot sole market is, shall we say, minute. R&D would move, justifiably, at a $nail's pace. I am interested in the to-and-fro that Simms did on their soles, and their position on the matter.

P.S. In a few hundred years, an archaeologist from another planet will be doing an excavation at Lake Ray Roberts ... and they will finally find my lost Korkers sole sandwiched in the mud, and they will wonder what it is.

I think I will just rent some felt soled boots from my guide for the LMFR trip. And buy some good sticky rubber boots with studs. And texasflycaster I think that interchangable sole idea would also leave me stuck in the mudd.

I swear I caught so many fish that the water level went down!

I saw the Simms boots online.. was wondering what type of quality they were. Good to know the sticky soles work on rock slime

I bought a pair two weeks ago ahead of an upcoming trip to Alaska. They are the best I've seen...love the easy on and the "tie" on system. Never expected to pay that much for wading boots but will be worth it if they are comfortable and safe all day.
