what needs to be taken into consideration before attempting this, or is this one of those things better left to the dealer?
tach not working properly, speedo not working at all, and now the trim gauge is giving me issues. thinking hard about tidying it up a little and going for an upgrade, maybe eliminate some of that tangled wire mess under the console at the same time.
thoughts??

Not that bad if you pay attention. Speedo has nothing to do with wiring (except for light) as it works off of water pressure from the lower unit or a speedo pickup. Check the trim sendor on the motor first. Then just clean and check all wire connections.

did mine (well had the mech do it since I was already gettin a lot more done). easy to do, just do one at a time and rehook the wiring as you go.

Not that bad if you pay attention. Speedo has nothing to do with wiring (except for light) as it works off of water pressure from the lower unit or a speedo pickup. Check the trim sendor on the motor first. Then just clean and check all wire connections. Do like Gary said and just be careful. I pulled out the dash panels before I did mine and took pictures so I could go back and look if I forgot something. Also tagging the wires with masking tape and labeling them is also a good way to make sure it all goes back the way it was. I also made all new dash panel as well because I added a temp and water pressure gauge. I also removed the speedo becuase they are never right and why waste $$$ on a gauge I can't trust. I replaced all the switches and added a fancy steering wheel too. Here is from my last boat I used diamond plate aluminum for the dash panel. It really looked sharp when I was finished.
