Do you guys/gals ever bring your dogs fishing? I would love to bring them along but I am terrified that they will catch a hook or get in the way when i am trying to reel in something. Any suggestions on how to safely bring the pups along?

Just gotta be careful close up bait storage such as hooks, lures, etc and aware of where they are when casting. They can be a lot of company if fishing by yourself. Be aware, they will snag your chicken or beef livers if your fishing with that...straight down the hatch!

I have a lab mix who goes with me on occasion. I will not take him in this heat unless I'm fishing from the bank.

A well trained dog goes a long way as far as taking him boating in general. Take a solo trip or one with the wife/gf and have watch it closely. Be sure to have a clean deck and boat. No hooks/baits in cup holders or anything of that nature.

For safety, I just put my dog in a harness so if he falls in I can safely bring him in the boat. I should probably get a life jacket for him in case of any boating accident which are getting more common these days. Hope this helps.

I've had 2 different dogs get hooked. One had to go to the vet, the other one got lucky and I could get it out. I train 'em early to not get around the rods, but when the fish action gets feverish it seems to get the dog(s) excited.

I just got a boat & when it cools off some, I will be taking my Brittany "JAKE" with me, like noted above, the boat will be clean & no hooks anywhere that he can get to. He's a little knucklehead, so I will have to watch him close but he loves to get in the boat at the house, if I get up in it to do something, he raises heck till I let him get up there in it.

I always took my two golden retrievers fishing with me from the time they were pups, except when the weather was really hot. They loved it. They each had their favorite spot in the boat, one by me and the other on the back deck. Their body language would signal me that it was time to take them to the bank. After they did their business they would take a swim and compete to retrieve a few sticks. Then I'd call them back to the boat and we'd go back to fishing. These were big dogs, but they did well in my 20-ft Skeeter. I only had one occassion where one stepped on a crankbait and took a hook through the web between her toes. She stood still while I removed it. Man, I miss those dogs!

I take my dogs as often as possible, once we get over 90 degrees they only get to go on daylight till noon trips and even then we take lots of swimming breaks to keep em cooled off. I probably fish more times per year just me and the dogs than I do with a partner.

I bought 4 of the large ones for all the rods I have out on the deck with exposed hooks. My male found himself a spinnerbait hook years ago from a rod laying on the deck. I ended up having to push it through and cut the barb off to get it out of his pad.

Both of our mini-dachshunds get to fish with me... when my wife comes along...they're 1 and 2 years old so they are a bit rowdy at times lol.

They each wear a life jacket at all times. When they jump in to cool off, I just hoist them into the boat by the handle on the back of their PFD. And they get very aggressive when a fish comes in the boat lol. Lots of nipping at the tail. Cracks us up every time. After 6 trips out, they can now recognize when we hook a fish and race each other to that end of the boat.

Some body makes Velcro wraps for your lures when it's secured to the rod. Wraps all the way around and keeps curious noses and tongues out of trouble. Been meaning to order some.

I take Abby with me all the time. I just make sure I'm careful with the baits. Stop once and a while when it is hot and let her swim and back we go.

For 12 years I had a 4 legged fishing buddy that was always ready to go fishing. I rigged up an umbrella to fit back deck chair hole when it was really hot.

I watched an older guy launch his boat, he had his dog with him. I though oh, this guy is taking his dog fishing with him, cool! Launches his boat and parks his truck. I park beside him and look over, the dog is in the truck! Couldn't believe it.
