Anglers Inn on Salto is the best experience. Easy to get to, one hour north of Mazatlan. Other lodges on Salto have the same fishing experience, but Anglers Inn has the best food and service. Terry Hollan's Baccarrac Lodge for quality, and a bunch of em. 1+ I was there in Feb had 150 fish days...

A buddy of mine and I were thinking of Falcon this late January or early February, but perhaps a trip to Mexico might be in the cards instead.
What are your thoughts on the best bass lake to fish in Mexico and lodges there to go to? We are trying to break that double digit barrier.
Safety is a factor as well - any recent experiences would be helpful
Thanks Guys A buddy of mine owns a lodge on Baccarac and he goes down probably 4 months out of the year on various trips. They have a charter they use that flies you pretty much directly there so no long drives. The fishing is insane. Every time he comes back he has this long list of fish they caught and they don't count anything under 7#. He said they have had zero issues with violence at any point. If you want me to hook you up with him just let me know. his name is Terry Rader.

Thanks for posting that Fouz. I called Terry to get the whole story and it was interesting to say the least. Terry Rader (my buddy) works directly with Terry Holland. He told me the details of what happened down there and it was tragic. So, to set the story straight, yes they had an incident down there back in 2008, but he's been going back and forth down there consistently ever since with no issues. I'm not promoting his business just answering the OP with what I was told by someone with specific experience. Sorry for the mis-post.

You have to look at the date of this particular issue. It is something that happened in 2008. I have been driving in with customers for 25 years and have never felt threatened in any way.
I look at it this way. You can be in the wrong theater or church here in our own country and be in real trouble, but I understand most people would perfer to die in their own country.

I agree, Mr. Harper. One needs to weigh their options and if a trip in Mexico feels good to them, then by all means, go!
That is a 2008 issue but you and I both know there have been many, many more issues since then.
The area you drive into through Sonora is probably one of the least dangerous right now.
I know of some guys that have been going to Sugar or Las Blancas recently, without any problems. That said, if you do go, dang sure don't be on the highway at night.
Coincidence is His way of remaining anonymous.

I was fishing Lake Mateos a couple of years ago. Chapman has a great lodge in a very small town right on the river. One morning when we got up to go fish, all the guides and wait staff were all giddy because El Chapo Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, had spent that night in the town. It was like Robin Hood had just left. To them, I guess he is Robin Hood. They are not out to kill fishermen, but what they do to their rivals is worse than death. Mexico has always had "banditos", but as it was explained at Comedero, they are not like American banditos, they will not kill you if you give them what they want. You can get hurt if you get caught in a cartel cross fire. Just stay at the lodge, and you will be okay.

I wouldn't be doing too much crossing right now if your a gringo. Not sure a fishing trip is worth losing your head over.

As far as size goes I had some friends get back a week from Sunday back and in three days they caught 2 over 11 and 4 more over 10 with many 9's and 8's. The guide does make a difference. Aa far as safety goes, dont be involved in drugs and do not be on rural highways after dark. You will have no problems at all. No one would drive to parts of LA or Houston or Chicago at night so use common sense. The fishing is great, for both size and numbers. IMO is is much safer to fly to El Salto than to drive across the border ask Charlie. Use common sense. I just hope Falcon does not get too low to fish.

By the way I do not think that Chapman has a lodge on Mateos anymoer. There is only one lodge operating there now. Great fishing there as well. Send me a pm if interested.
