Went to a spot I haven't fished in a while. I ended up catching a few small commons, buff's, and a nice grass carp. My first one on fly. Lost a much larger one afterwards. This one was 43" long with a 24.5" girth.

Yeah, it was quite a fight! I had to play it pretty easy since the hook was pretty small & I've been having them straighten out or break. It kept making smoking fast runs into my backing and towed me around in my yak for quite a while, weaving in & out of the numerous stick ups until finally heading out to deeper water. It was tough trying to land it solo. I got lucky that everything held. The hook fell out just as I hauled it onboard and was almost straight. The leader was frayed the whole length from the flooded brush. It was a damselfly nymph I tie. 48# is huge, weird that yours didn't fight much, but I've had some fish do that, too.

What a fish – what a catch – what a fight - I have come to believe they are an outstanding sport fish!
CONGRATULATIONS!

Those things will take you into the backing in a heartbeat and continue to fight after you land them – I’ve caught several but never over 15 lbs..!
I can imagine the fight with brush and rocks.

Tell us more about your tackle set up.
Good job!

I have caught probably 100 grass carp and seen probably that many landed (on euro gear) and I would say of all of those fish only about 20% of them actually put up a fight while in the water most of them go nuts when you take them out of the water and beat you up on the bank.

Also the ones that fought generally died and many that didn't fight died as well...trying to get rid of a 50lb dead fish in a camp ground is harder then you would think.

I have pictures of a 68lb grass carp I caught and a 71lb grass carp a friend of mine caught from a pond that was probably 1/2 an acre.

LSC, where do you catch all these Grass Carp? (White Amur)
They are illegal to stock in Texas without a permit from TP&W …

I know you know this but for others info…
grin

Don't know about other places, but I can't imagine these were stocked on purpose. It's a public lake that never has had any problems with vegetation. I've also seen them in the Brazos, Paluxy, & Bosque rivers recently. I suppose they could be escapees, but the number of them and variety of places where I've seen them make me suspicious.

I'm kinda surprised to hear they tend to not fight well. I took some short video near the end of the fight with this one and it gave me a good drenching & smoked off on a run just after I got it near the surface. Guess I need to stick a few more & see how they are. wink

Caught a bunch of them from lake Austin.

There is a upon off Voss rd in north dallas that had them up to 60lbs its where I caught the 48 on the fly rod

There is a pond in an apartment complex in Keller that has some fish over 100lbs
