The GPS refresh rates on Lowrance HDS units come from the factory with a default auto setting. This auto setting adjusts the GPS refresh rate based on your speed. Some settings work pretty well from the factory, but this is not one of them. If youre speeding down the lake, the refresh rate is fast. If youre idling slowly down a ledge, the refresh rate is very slow and does not update the micro movements. This causes serious update delays
causing your unit to live in the past. If precise boat positioning is important to you and it should be you want real time updates.
The best way to get around these slow refresh rates is by going into the Waypoints, Routes, and Trails menu.
1) Press Page
2) Press the right arrow on the cursor pad to scroll over to Waypoints, Routes and Trails
3) Use the arrows to select trails and hit the menu button.
4) Use the cursor pad to highlight settings, then press the enter button
5) Change the logging type to Time
6) Finally, set the time to 1 sec. Press close and exit out. Know this post is from awhile back..However Just got Gen 2's and both of them were set on 5 sec refesh rate changed to 1 sec.. will try them shortly..wonder if I will notice a change.

I just read through this entire thread.... and sure picked up a lot of good information!! I just got a new boat and the side imaging and down imaging are out of this world!! I still need to do some tweaking on it, but is most definitely useful. I have some issues with the 2D sonar on both the HDS5 on the bow and on the HDS8 on the console.... I suppose it will be some trial and error getting all the settings right, to get it how I like.... I only spent 2 days on the water with it so far, and have never had anything like these units. My learning curve will be steep... but worth the climb. I appreciate all the good stuff I picked up reading tonight....Thanks

You will need the TS-LSS2-L bracket TS-LSS2-L link The CMC jack plate has both a flat side model and one with ridges. Do you know which you have? The plate with ridges down the side will need a spacer in addition to the L-Bracket. Give me a call so we can discuss what you need. Brian

Ok folks, Working with a mapping project and in need of some techy help. In the past have been able to use a track log to get points with depths from the usr file or gpx to then bring in to a GIS coverage to do some interpolation and develop accurate depth maps. HDS 5 was used logging every second on a 200 acre impoundment most transects ran at less than 5 mph. I did not use the record feature that captures screen etc, just the track log recording. I exported the track files in Verson 2, 3, 4 and GPX formats, but none show actual depth values. Is there something I am doing incorrectly? I am using dnrgps (a program offered through MNDNR) to do the conversion to shapefile.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

djdoubl, go into your settings and make sure your map is set to navionics and not lowrance. I belive you need to go to settings, scroll down the chart, then right arrow over will give you chart settings. You should see in the top line a drop down box with Lowrance & Navionics as your 2 options. Make sure Navionics is selected.

Question for you guys. Saturday I was on the lake and my sturcture scan was reading out 2.9' or 3' everywhere I went but was picking up the bottom around 18'. The 2d sonar was picking up the bottom right as well at 18'. Iv had this problem once or twice in the past and just turned the unit off and back on it it was fine but saturday it didnt fix this. Anyone know whats going on and what I need to do?
Thanks

Wow im not sure what to tell ya. I saw your post in the catfish section and I would think you should be getting more detail than that. I have the same card, either 08 or 09, cant remember and mine shows a lot more detail. I noticed your screen shot has fishing hot spots on it. Are you sure this isnt the Navionics Fishing Hot Spots chip? Im not familiar with those chips or what they show so I could be way off. Just a guess because I see the hotspots on your screenshot.
