I had a similar experience.
I got all 3 rod/reels back by taking a extremely large treble hook from a swim bait and at least 1 1/2 oz of bullet weights on 65 lb braid and i started dragging the bottom real slow, but it was only about 8-9 ft where they fell off. It worked for me.

Story:
I laid 3 rod/reel combos to the side while digging in another box. Those rods just happened to be laying on the rod box that my wife decided to put her purse in and just like that they were all in the water. After about 2 1/2 hrs i got all 3 of them back. I still to this day wish I hadnt cursed under my breath for all 2 1/2 hrs and stared her down. I was mad they were expensive combos.
