grew up in Texas, heard them called polliwogs, and mudcats, wasn't till MUCH LATER in life that i heard them called bullheads! It was in the year AYI(After Yankee Invasion)! Bullhead/polliwog/mud cat is ugly as sin itself. Channel cat is long, sleek, and when small, speckled spotted. Bullhead/polliwog/mud cat, unless it comes from extremely clear water or spring fed, clear running streams can taste kind of dicey. Like mud, or pungent, in most cases, not so good. Channel cat, except in very rare instancess, has a white, sweet, quite tasty meat. Channel cats get quite large, Polliwogs/bullheads/mud cats, not so much. it should be easy to identify baby Channel or Bluecats from Mudcats. The main identifying feature is their tail. A channel or Bluecat will have a V in their tailfins, while a Mudcat has a rounded tail. The trouble can come when identifying small Mudcats with small Yellowcats. Their tails are the same, so you have to look at the shape of their mouths and where their eyes are located. Main thing for me between these two is that Yellows have a longer, sloping head, while a Mudcat has a sort of blunted head. Maybe someone else can give more identifying features for Yellows. Hope this helps!!!

Most that i have caught have been up in the creeks. They love worms, and hot dogs, but will hit shad and punch baits. I know of some that get caught in the main lake though.
