I am curious about the rogue wave premise. A commercial fishing captain I know who fished just south of Alaska never saw a rogue wave in over 25 years on the water. There are tales but hard to say if they are natural or man made. Interesting take on the tanker. Never though about large ships causing it but their wakes have to be huge.

When walking the shore line on a beach in Oregon it mentioned rogue waves...I had a wave come 15 feet up the beach to soak my legs...no obvious warning watching the water.

Cheers

A true rogue wave is when one of the waves gets out of time with the waves around it. It "catches" or is "caught" by the wave in front of or behind it and the energy is combined. This throws it way out of time and it absorbs more waves. It happens quite often around the bottom of Africa. The super current gets pinched in a narrow trough and the winds blow in a different direction. Any time you have a wave that is twice the height of the significant wave height it's considered a rouge wave. Straight up and over is NOT the preferred way to go over one. A 45 degree angle and decreasing speed prevents pitch poling and other nasty things.

Interesting. Has their been any scientific reports done on this? My boat captain friend on the west coast of Canada would be very interested. Thanks

With centuries of mariners before us its interesting that we just started hearing about rogue waves recently. Makes me wonder if the old time mariners had a way to read the sea that modern radar and technology are missing?

The history channel, BBC, PBS and others have shows on them. Google search for rogue wave documentary. Old Salts have always talked about rogue waves but using a single wave model the science guys said they couldn't exist. Only by combining waves could their existence be validated by science. In one of the films it shows footage of a wave breaking out the windows and killing the electronics in the pilot house of a huge cargo ship. Super scary stuff.

I know that they exist on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
A friend and I were almost killed while fishing off of some rocks. No ships anywhere around.
