I was actually telling myself this very same thing last night! I have always had a strong hookset, but here lately i have been losing and breaking off right at the hookset to many times! Im starting to think i got a bad spool of line, but i am definitely gonna take this read to heart and lighten up a little on the hookset! Ive never had this problem before and trust me Ive had my heart broke quite a few times lately! Very frustrating!

It doesn't take long for line kept in the boat to become week with the heat along with other things. 1. The oils and chemicals that are in soft plastics will destroy the knot. Always take you soft plastics down off the knot if you are going to leave it for a week or longer. This is something I do every time off the water; or I will do the retying at night on all rods used. 2. Fueling the boat with rods on the passanger storage system will damage the line. All it takes is the fumes from the gas. Some of the fill caps are so sensitive to kick back gas will spew out and get on the carpet. Any rods touching that carpet even after it has evaperated will cause the line to deteriate. It will destroy Floro., you can acturally see the outside coating all messed up and feels like it has rubbed the biggest stump in the lake. 3. Ever ate a pack of crackers left in the boat for a couple of weeks. With saltiens it only take 2 days. They taste like gas. The same thing happens to line that you leave in the boat. It will absorb the fumes and become much weeker causing some of your problems of breaking off.

Maybe,on the fish that fly over the deck and land,in the water,on the ther side of the boat. The fish that, merely, fly into the boat,on the hookset, are set, about, right.

Thats a good read. I've been pitching and flipping more this year than ever. I love hand to hand combat with these fish. I've lost more big fish this year than ever. Some when I was using a Palomar knot with fluorocarbon. Others without reeling up all the slack in my line before whackin him. I'm always afraid he'll spit the hook before I can reel down. If you are beaking Fluorocarbon Line with a Palomar knot then you are doing something wrong or have an issue with yourguides. I use 20lb-25lb Fluorocarbon Line with that knot and I don't break off like that.

If you are breaking off on the hook set then you are setting the hook too hard. Some people try to impress others with how hard they set the hook. The object is to get them in the boat and to the weigh-in. Not who can set the hook the hardest.

I never have problems with breaking line on the hookset (or otherwise other than a rare fray I didn't re-tie) and I think I set the hook pretty dang hard. I use XPS fluro and set the hook thinking that I need to drive home the hook through a big ol' tough mouth. If a little pounder decides to snack then he is going to get a little tear. Nothing to do about it.

That's a real nice story by ol' Troy, but that ain't right! Set the hook as hard as you can, every time! That's what FZ1 does, and the worst thing that happens,is,the fish flys over the deck and gets landed on the other side of the boat.

I use "very sharp" hooks and am confident in thier ability to penetrate the jowl of a LMB without swinging for the fence everytime I feel a bump. Dont get me wrong, I put it on their azz but I dont break rods, knots or go flying over the side of the boat in the process.......Anymore
