We release the big females, but the males we eat. We also donate to alot of church and benefit fish fries. Once our freezers are filled each year we photo and release alot as well. This may seem like a dumb question, but can you post the difference between a male and a female Flat-head, most of us are not that familiar with the Flat-Heads!!! Thanks, And Good Luck to Ya!!!

This will work with all species off cats not just flatheads. I will post photos of the next ones I catch so everyone knows. I will be as politically correct as possible. If you look at the underside of a fish where the sexual organs are. A male has a hole I guess you would call it an anus on the head end. Right behind it pointed towards the tail he has a small penis. This will only be about 3/16" to 3/8" depending on the weight of the fish. It will be atached to the body not free hanging, with a small penhole in the end. Obvioustly a female has a pair of holes. The males will have very large heads with slender body, and females will have a smaller head and large bodies as well. As soon as I get closups I will post the photos. We release the big females, but the males we eat. We also donate to alot of church and benefit fish fries. Once our freezers are filled each year we photo and release alot as well. Also, if you look at the picture above with the fish laying on the dock. Take note of the very bottom fish in the picture. That is a female, notice how small the head is in relation to the huge body. The fish above her at a 45deg. angle you will notice has a similar head size with alot more slender body and tail. It is the male she was paired with. After photos we released all the females in this pick successfully.

Got a few flatties tonight :-) My wife noodled her first channel cat out from under a rock that I told her would never have one under it. Found a big one but couldn't get it to bite any hands and the hole was too far back. I'll leave it for Jason to show us how its done on Friday or Saturday. Not bad for 2 hours after work. Anyway, got some fresh fish for a fish fry this weekend! Number 2

Man, you need to feed your noodlin partner. Put that dude on a high protein diet. He will need it to fight what we'll be after friday.

That's me, and I eat. I just have a super high metabolism. I'll drag anything out of a hole willing to bite no problem.

holy [censored]. My wife is like that, she eats more than I do and she just stays the same weight. I was like that till I hit 30. Ive put on 30 lbs in 7 years. Went from 150 to around 180 from 30 to 33. Been coasting around that for about 4 years. Keep threatening to do some P90x but I'm too busy fishin and huntin.

What you can do in 6 hrs once you have it figured out. 912 lbs on 5/1/12 What you can do in 6 hours time, easily out weights what a rod & reel angler could do in double that time. Thank you for posting this pic as I hope it helps educate the need for limits on noodling and rod & reel.

OK, Why is it that everytime a pic is posted it is compared to rod and line? Fact is noodling has been around alot longer than line. yet we are the ones scrutinised for our catches. Most of these fish were released. And I agree, I have personally spoken with the TPWD about the need to change the limits. As far as how many we catch on a trip, get a pair of gloves and you can do the same. I know for a fact that rod and line fisherman catch way more than I do as far as numbers go. Just can't compare on size.

First off, let me state that I officially think what you're doing is freaking AWESOME! My post came out looking like I was trying to preach and I'm not. BUT....like you said, rod&reel guys can take in a zillion eating size fish, but I was more concerned with the SIZE of fish you're harvesting and I don't know of any rod & reel angler (even DamFisherman!!) that can catch that many, THAT SIZE in 1 outing. Glad you agree that some of the big ones need to be put back to keep the gene pool going, I also think there needs to be limits on how many over a certain size that can be kept. But this noodling thing in Texas is still taking off, will probably take a few years to understand the impacts, if any.
But there is no doubt....alot of Texas anglers aren't used to seeing that many fish, that size, taken from 1 outing. In 1 pic, you just caused plenty of Catfish anglers to go... "holy..s$%^...you just brought in more / bigger fish in 1 outing, than I do in a year!!!" lol..

I don't think that's representative of what the majority of anglers in Texas will be bringing in using the noodling method. I've been noodling about 10 times this year and I've caught 2 flatheads, 2 channel cats, and 1 bluecat. I normally catch that on 1 set with a single trotline, but I prefer noodling now. IMO, It takes alot more skill, work, and patience than setting a trotline or throwing out juglines. I think Jason and his team have been doing this a very long time and are just really good at it. Limits are set based on harvest and available population, not method of harvest. In other words, If an angler catches his limit of flatheads in a day, it doesn't matter if he caught them on rod and reel, trotline, jugline, or handfishing, the same amount of fish will be harvested. Just my opinion.

I may be speaking out of turn, but it seems what I am seeing and hearing, is the concern that even though you put back the fish once they are taken off the nest that nest is done with. That is if they are spawning, which I understand they are.
